When I put a new DVD into my computer and look at properties, it is completely blue saying there is no free space and no used space. I gather it need formatting which was easy with Windows ME but with XP it doesn't give that option when you right click on it. How do you format a DVD before using it? Yes, I have checked the plus and minus signs and it is compatible with my DVD player.

You can't format a DVD.
When you burn something to it it will write a table of contents which will show what it has on it

Hope this helps
curious ... the acid test is ... can you write to it?

the only formatting you can do with a dvd (or CD) is to wipe a CD-rw or DVD-rw
all the r versions are ready to use

No, I can't write to it - when I try the computer tells me to put a disc in - and they are brand new discs!! I thought it was because they needed formatting but obviously by both your answers that is not the reason.
have you writen to any other dvds?

if yes ... could just be a faulty batch
