monitor format

Is there a reason why the techos developed the 19"LCD monitor to display at 1280X1024 resolution, instead of sticking to the usual 4X3 format such as 1280X960 ? ? ?

My old and trusted games have oval balls and skinny people.

I've yet to come across <a>any montior with a native res of 1280x960.
