My PC told me it had detected that I was holding down the Ctrl key (which I wasn't) and asked if I wanted to re-start in safe mode? I didn't have a clue, so ignored it and luckily got away with it. What sort of things can one actually do in safe mode, and having got into it how do you get out of it? Any comment/advice would be welcome. Thanks everyone and a Happy New Year.

Safe mode just loads windows with minimal amount of drivers. It doesn't allow you to do very much really, its just there so you can start Windows to rectify a problem.
