I got a new card last week and have been paying regularly online and in shops etc.

However I'm trying to buy another online and it won't accept the card. My card is Santander Debit - but if I remember correctly - on the last card it would have said Santander Visa. Would this be a problem.

Santander switched from issuing Visa debit cards, to using Mastercard ones instead, two years ago but I can't see why that should present a problem online.
Is it a different number on the card ?
If this is a new card, I think you have to use it in the real world before it can be used on line. It's to stop fraud.
Yes Hopkirk, as to be activated as well.
JJ I posted about this last week.
My card changed from Santander Visa debit to Mastercard and I had to go to validate it at a chip and pin before I could use it online.
They said the pin would stay the same unless they send me a new one which they didn't.
The number on the card was different as was the number on the back of the card.

believe you me - it has been well deactivated. I have contacted the company - they'll contact me tomorrow.

You know because I've tried 3 times to buy it - the last 4 digits of the new card comes up - it goes like this .....1234 - and the amazing thing I just done it for a laugh - clicked onto the dots and the full correct number came up.
Question Author
right - as Chris has said - don't think it should be a problem but I was completely unaware that I am Mastercard as it doesn't say the actual word on the card but looking at it - (I only have one card) there are two symbols at the bottom of the card one red circle sitting on a yellow circle which probably means Mastercard. So I'll know again.

However I did try again saying Mastercard but wouldn't accept. Not a big deal - not gasping for it or any thing.

Barsel - when I got this new card - I just continued using my old pin number
Yes JJ, they said to do that, same pin.
Is it a different number on the front and back to your old card?
I had a bit of a problem using it for shopping online at Tesco and had to get a OTP from Santander to enter and then it was accepted.
Question Author
Yes Barsel - the whole number is completely different to my last card - back and front ie 16 digits and 3 numbers at the back. Of course my account number is still on it but that's to be expected.
Question Author
Barsel - when you were in Tesco - did you have to the OTP right there and then in the shop.

If so that definitely shouldn't have happened. The only OTP I have had to give has been online.

If you have to do that again like OTP - just get a brand new card and new pin number.
Was you trying to buy from Amazon or Ebay ?, if so so may have to add your new card number.
JJ I was ordering from Tesco online shop.
Still probably have to add her new card ( number ) if her old card number is the one that is registered.
well, it doesn't surprise me as to Santander....

On Saturday I went on-line and sent my daughter money. As of yesterday and today, it had not arrived.

I tried contacting them - twice by their on-line chat - not working. Then by phone yesterday evening and this afternoon - both times their voice recognition doesn't work. I had to wait 20 minutes yesterday to get a human, 30 today. Yesterday I wanted the transaction number so that my daughter could contact her bank - 15 minutes on hold (the last time I had this was with Lloyds and it took them two minutes). Today, we enacted the trace - another 3 minutes - so in total very close to 90 minutes on the blower - I've asked them for compensation for the phone bill.......Chaos over there it seems and there was a message that they had an issue with m-card transaction hitting accounts......

Tonyav - I have ordered about 6 items in the past few weeks for myself and sister and was aware of the new card - so just ADDED new card and the purchases went through no problem and have received the items.
Question Author
Barsel - as you know the OTP thing is a security thing and because you were using it for the first time in Tescos online - that came up as a security thing but you have been using it in shops ok ie using old pin number etc.
Question Author
DTC - since all the "changes etc" happened - but when I sent my niece money - I just transferred money from my account number to her account number (like a wee transfer box on the left side of the site) and within minutes she received it as she phoned me to let me know. It is awful trying to get a human and that bot on the Santander site is pain in the a%se.

No JJ, I haven't used it in the shops at al yet
Have only had it a couple of days, but will be using it tomorrow in the shop as a contactless.
I activated it with chip and pin at the ATM and then used it for buying online.
Question Author
DTC - I;m sure you know this - but I had a look at my Santander account and as I said there is a wee box "quick transfer from" to the other person.
