We are used to naff answers to questions on some of our tv quizzes but surely, this one takes the biscuit. And on Mastermind of all places.
Spent an hour catching up with the first 2 episodes of the new series, tonight, and cannot rec all which episode this particular question was in. The question went something like, Which member of the Royal family gave birth to her first child on 9 Feb 2021?" The woman's answer? "Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother." I kid you not!!

Ruddy 'eck!

I thought that everyone knows that it was Queen Victoria!
I thought it was one of Andrew's concubines ;-)
On Pointless last night, one of the questions asked was (something like this) who entered into his second marriage with Christine Kaufmann in 1963 his initials are T.C.
The man answered, Tom Cruise!
1963 was 58 years ago , so how old does he think Tom Cruise is now?
must have heard the 21 bit but not the 20, since she was thinking of the queen's birthday. Okay, it would still have been five years out, but it's an error of not listening closely enough, rather than gross stupidity. (I still very occasionally find myself thinking of the date as 19.. rather than 20.. having spent so much of my life there.)
Everyone should know that in Mastermind you should avoid saying 'pass' at all costs.

If you don't know, or didn't fully hear the question, it is better to give any answer than to say 'pass'.
^ unless the question is, 'in football, soccer, hockey, and other games an act of throwing, kicking or hitting the ball or puck to another player on the same team'
Sorry, I'll have to pass on that one.
Of course it’s not always advantageous to avoid saying pass: I’ve watch contestants waste valuable time trying to avoid saying one simple word while struggling to avoid it!

I agree with jno: that’s more likely a question of not paying attention to the date. But if the answer given really was “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother” then that’s a ridiculously longwinded answer when time is of the essence. They could have maybe fitted in another question if they’d passed, and possible avoided a tie, which is the only time it matters

I would respectfully suggest that if you're not going to give full attention to the questions being asked, you shouldn't really be on a tv quiz. Particularly one with questions as lengthy as those on Mastermind.
Is that with the greatest respect, Ken?

Pass
Unless you have been on a tv quiz show you don't really know how you'll react. I'm sure I'd be like a rabbit froze in the car headlights
I think you are being over critical, Ken.

It all looks easy from our armchairs. A touch harder when seated in the chair with strong lighting and national TV cameras on you.

Barry, some of the contestants on Mastermind are regulars. In episode 2, Ian Wang was making yet another appearance in the chair.
Hoppy; The woman in question, Barbara Cunningham, is an actress - bit-part, granted, but certainly no novice in front of a camera.
Not sure that following a script with the facility to have re-takes after mistakes is similar to being asked random questions within a set time limit.
KEN, since you're not even sure which of two episodes this happened in, perhaps you need to work on your own level of concentration?

It was the second one, by the way.

TCL; See above where i mention episode 2. By he way, i'm not the one being asked the questions. Note to TCL; must concentrate on prior posts.
My son was on Junior Mastermind, with John Humphreys.

He said if he wasn't sure he would say Ernest Hemingway.
I almost jumped up and cheered when he did just that. (It was the wrong answer, of course)
I'm sure Ian Wang was a recent captain on Uni Challenge

You are correct, gg. I had him mixed up with another smartariss :-) There have been contestants who have appeared in more than one series of Mastermind, though.
