I have some old WW1 photos that I want to reproduce. The problem is that some of the photos are damaged by cracking and I would like to repair/touch up during the copying process.

Can anyone please recommend an easy-to-use ( and free) programme that would enable me to do this ?

Cheers.

Photo restoration is one of the most complex tasks (or, more accurately, combination of tasks) that you can do with image-editing software. None of the more basic programs can do the job well, so you're really forced to use something like Photoshop (expensive) or Gimp (free) if you want to achieve decent results. paint.net but you'll have to have some skill to do these restorations...

The best software would be Photoshop, but it's hard to find free editing software. Especially a good one.

Click on paint.net 4.1.5

ipiccy is an online app that has most of the basic Photoshop tools, it's free and accessible from anywhere, and fine for thinks like photo restoration x

Gimp has a very steep learning curve so I'd normally avoid recommending it to a novice but, for the reasons I've given above, it's what I think you actually need for the task ahead of you:

Fortunately though, you'll only need a fairly small subset of all the commands available in Gimp so, with a bit of help from Youtube, you should be able to get to grips with it fairly quickly. This guy has produced an excellent series of 7 easy-to-follow videos, which cover everything you'll need to know:

Thanks all.

Chris, I did look at Gimp but, as you say, it was rather daunting for a novice. I might give it another look later but will probably experiment with the other two suggestions from Spath and Klav first.

Cheers.
