The "A" key on my friend's laptop has given up. Is there a simple way to allocate these "a" letters to another key?

Have you tried prising the key off and blowing or brushing?
He could install AutoHotkey, and program some other combination to output the "a" and "A".

Personally, I'd just get a USB keyboard.
