Is it not written on the label on the back or underside of your router ?

I have a network extender which I set up too long ago to recall, but I *think* it was merely asking for the WAP so it could log onto the existing router.

Hi old_geezer ( thought I was the only one ! ) I have tried all the numbers on the router to no avail but thanks for your reply.

The best thing you could do is login to your router 192.168.1.1 and check your settings the default settings are SSID Admin PASSWORD Password
You can change these here using WAP2 as security . You should have changed both of these to prevent anyone logging on to your network.
^^^Galeck's post seems to have assumed that your router, as well as your wifi range extender, is made by Netgear. If it's a different make it's IP address might be different as (quite probably) the default settings will be. So we might need to know the make and model of your router to tell you how to 'get into it'.

Further, if your router was provided by your ISP it will have been delivered pre-configured to to the ISP's own settings, with the information you need provided in a letter that came with the router (as mine was). If so (assuming you've not changed it) your ISP should have a record of your password.
There seems to be a small range of IP addresses used as the Management webpage for a router. A quick web search ought to bring up possibilities for the actual router under discussion. Then you can try them as the address in the Internet browser of choice and see if they work.
