I have a Lenovo G570. Randomly one day it just refused to start up. Basically when you press the power button it lights up for a few seconds and you hear the system fan start but then it just switches off. I have tried removing ram modules and the hard disk and starting to see if they were the cause, I have also tried

- a different motherboard
- a different power button
- 2 power supplys
- replacing the cable that the power connects

I have tried only plugging in the power and the power button plus the cooling fan to the board and switching on and the same things happens (on two boards)....the power light lights up for 2-3 seconds and the fan spins and then it just shuts off. I have litterally replaced everything and can't see what it is.

I have found a you tube video showing what it does but its in Russian or something.....but FYI -

Please help, have tried Lenovo and they are useless!!

Thanks

Is it an old lappy Andy?
Question Author
not particularly a couple of years, but it is out of warranty.
Typical eh? Things always go wrong just when warranty expires. Do you have a local repair shop? Plenty of them near me and they all give quotes. I had a Lenovo for 7+ years and it eventually had to be given the old heave ho and I got a new Lenovo in August. Sorry, I'm of no help. Hans is the person to help you and hopefully he will be along soon to answer your query.

thanks, I know enough to strip it and replace the components which is what I have done....thats why I am stumped.
I notice that Hans is currently online so I hope he sees your post
You've tried 2 motherboards, Andy. I guess you haven't changed the processor and fan?
Personally, I think you may have a problem in the cabling from Power Supply to Motherboard.

I think a visit to a local pc shop is required.

Hi, I have replaced the cable between power source and mother board, same thing. I have tried plugging in the motherboard with no CPU on it and the same thing happens.

I don't want to pay a shop to do what I can do to be honest and I can't see what else there is to try.

Right now I have a bare motherboard with only a power button and a dc cable for the ac adapter plugged into it and the power button lights up for a few seconds and then switches off the same thing happens on two mother boards.....
The Mobo will not post without a fitted cpu and will therefore shut down. If you refit the cpu (don't forget the thermal paste) and cpu fan do you get any beeps?
@janbee......I am flattered by the fact of your are thinking that I could help our member andydingdangdoo. To be very honest, I shake in my shoes whenever I open-up a Computer to replace a part. I think it would be fair to say that I am better out than in. (Sorry if that sounds rude...but it's true even if interpreted out of context.)

Hopefully someone like Methyl, Buenchicho or some other AB Techie will come along to assist matters.

Hopeless Hans.
Hans, you are NOT helpless. You helped me with my query. I hold you in very high esteem.

SlackAlice, this is interesting so lets say the processor was faulty.....would that mean the device would turn of an on like this.....is there anyway to tell if it is faulty or do I need to buy another to prove it?
I was thinking along the same lines as Slackness. I'm no expert, but I think that M/boards will sense that no fan is present, assume the CPU is overheating, and shut down.

Try it with the CPU and fan fitted. I would think it's more likely to be a fan fault. Much cheaper to substitute than the CPU
Question Author
Just tried it and that didn't work....the fan does spin up and then stops....you think even though it does that it could still be faulty and so as it stops the things powers down?

Worth a try I suppose it's the only thing not swapped! Although CPU is the same.
It's just a shot, Andy.

A faulty fan could mean it's drawing too much current, so the M/board "thinks" it's too hot.

Really just a guess though.
Question Author
you're right about this being the cheapest option so I will give that a shot!

Thanks
TBH I'm thinking 'cooked' cpu.
Yes, Slacks, I guess that will do it. At least it'll be the last thing to try :o)
