Could someone please tell me in simple language how to do this? They all suddenly disappeared, though the hateful 'tiles' are still there. I have tried a restart but had no luck, and looked at an online tutorial but I am none the wiser.
Help! and thanks.

Click on the tile labelled 'Desktop' or use the Windows key (between Ctrl and Alt).

If you are using W8.1 (can't remember if this is available for W8) then when you are at the desktop right-click on the taskbar, select Properties at the bottom of the menu that appears, then the Navigation tab within the window that appears, and within that you'll find the setting for going straight to the desktop instead of Start.

Thank you for this. I have checked what you suggested and all seems in order. Maybe I should have said that these icons are shortcuts- would that make a difference?
Thanks again.
