Hi. we now have about 2000 photos saved on our computer, having no idea about how much room these would take up on a memory stick I would be grateful if someone could tell me whether there is one with enough capacity to save them all to just the one stick(or other alternative). Don`t want to lose them if computer crashes..
Thanks..

It depends on the resolution of the photographs I'm afraid, they range drastically. What have they been taken with might be a good starting point, or randlomly select maybe 10 and average their size, although niether will be very accurate in terms of measuring the size you need.
if they are all in one file, you should be able to see what the file size is. If they aren't, then copy (DO NOT MOVE) them all to one file. I keep my photos on an external hard drive but I have loads and they are quite high res
Could you store them in Picasa? You can access that through Google.

If I buy the biggest capacity stick there is(no idea what that will be) do you have a sort of "ball park figure" of how many photos that may hold..
Actually that's a good idea Sandy, plus the new outlook accounts have 8 gb of online storage as well, so you could certianly use the net to store them.

External hard drive sounds good, how much are they and what capacity should I get, sorry if silly questions but not my territory this..
If you hover over your photo folder it will tell you how big the file is. Or hover over it and select properties. You should then know how big the memory stick will have to be.
I'd look at a 32GB SD memory card which should be plenty. These cloud storages seem great but they worry me as the only back-up (must be the dinosaur in me).

Thanks Mr King, that helps.. Don`t like these computers much!!
I have Picasa, I didn't realise it stored the photos I always thought it was only really acting as a viewer of the photos held on your computer.
Backing up to an external hard drive is better than to a memory stick as memory sticks can easily get lost.

Mind you doing to BOTH is even better as you can never have too many backups.

A 500Gb external hard drive will be plenty, though you can also buy 1Gb, 2Gb and 3Gb external hard drives.

You could backup to the cloud as well, as some companies offer free space (Google and Microsoft for example).

As I said, better to back up to 3 or 4 places than to back up to only one, a memory stick, then find you lose it or it gets stolen.
i have a 2bg external hard drive that i store cctv images on, i have 6 months on there at a time and i'm currently using 931gb

not sure if that helps
Yorky Lass, I think it does store the pictures online. If you used another computer, say in a public library, to go to the Picasa account you could view them there.

I have looked at one of my folders with 1,800 photos in it and it comes to less than 5Gb.

So yours may be less if they are lower quality pictures, or more if better quality pictures, but I doubt it will be more than 10Gb even if you have very high quality photos.

Note if you have some video clips taken with a camera they will be much bigger than photos.
Sandy, didn't realise Picasa was an account program. It's just a program I've downloaded to both laptops. I don't have to sign in to either as I thought an account program would ask me to do. Is there two Picasa programs?
I love it for sending photos by email and adjusting and cropping.
It says here you need a google account.

"Picasa is software that helps you instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. Every time you open Picasa, it automatically locates all your pictures (even ones you forgot you had) and sorts them into visual albums organized by date with folder names you will recognize. You can drag and drop to arrange your albums and make labels to create new groups. Picasa makes sure your pictures are always organized.

Picasa also makes advanced editing simple by putting one-click fixes and powerful effects at your fingertips. And Picasa makes it a snap to share your pictures, you can email, print photos home, make gift CDs, instantly share your images and albums, and even post pictures on your own blog.

The latest version includes Web Albums (along with other improvements), but requires that you request an account from Google."
Thanks Sandy. I do have a Google account as I have a Gmail address. Didn't realise it was connected. However the two Picasa programs I have don't have the same photos, they only have the photos that are actually on that particular laptop. I must update them.
Apologies Barney for taking over your post a little bit.
