Computer slow to start up

When I start the computer I get a 'Windows Vista home premium' page with the word welcome and the little rotating wheel. It's taking more than 5 minutes to move on to the desktop and when I click on an icon, Opera for example, it's taking ages to open the page. Any help gratefully accepted.

Probably need to check what it going on in the background. Open up task manager and see what is taking resource.

Probably worth doing the old malware scan too.
