Invalid copy of Win 7

My daughter's (school supplied) laptop has started displaying a message saying that the copy of Win 7 on it is invalid.

Now, as it's half term, the support bod at the school is unavailable, and though we have a system recovery CD, we don't have a registration key for Win 7, and of course the laptop doesn't have a DVD/CD drive. I'd be reluctant to used the recovery disk anyway as the thing came with some school specific stuff pre-loaded.

Can she keep using it for now and is there anything we can do about the problem without having to go through the school ?

"Can she keep using it for now"

If it's still letting her log in then yes, although you won't get any updates for you computer until it's sorted.

"is there anything we can do about the problem without having to go through the school ? "

Is it your daughters laptop, or is it a school laptop that your daughter is allowed to use? if it's her property then you can do what you want with it, if it's only on loan to your daughter then you need to take it back to the school.
I suspect MS is claiming the registration key used is invalid. They seem to love to time it so the unwitting consumer gets caught and not the illegal seller. I assume it is a sick sense of humour at MS. Anyway, point I was trying to make was that even if you had & entered the same number again it would still get rejected.

If they gave you are recovery disk i'd suspect you could try it but 2 things. a) I'd be surprised if it fixed anything since it is the registration number that is under suspicion, and b) since MS isn't blocking you using the laptop but just being annoying, then why not continue using it until the schools are back ?

Thank you both for your answers.

Chuck, the laptop is being purchased through the school, and I know they would say that we can do what we want with it. It does come with a maintenance contract, again via the school, and the way it is set up the accounts are, I think, for the school tech support team and for my daughter to log in to the school network when she beings it to school.

I'll get on to the school next week and get them to sort it out.
if it works of course use it
