Video-editting software wanted

I have had a free 14 day trial on a software called VideoPad (very good it was too), but now I have to buy it at $46.00. I don't mind that so much, but for what I want it for is not worth buying as I am trying to make a (one-off) trade video for You-Tube. Are there any free softwares out there with decent editing facilities (Windows Media Player would be best)??

Windows Live Movie Maker
Lightworks is a full professional video-editing package, which has been placed in the public domain. (It's the program used to make 'The King's Speech', 'Johnny English', 'Braveheart' and many other big name movies).

However professional editing packages often require steep learning curves. As Baz suggests, the freebie from Microsoft is surprisingly good for amateur work:
