Buying a new Laptop

My Asus X56V Laptop is a pain: Touch pad doesn’t work, Disc Drive doesn’t work, I use Windows Publisher for advertising flyers that are then printed professionally, but my Vista is not compatible with colleagues Windows 7 so we can’t pass work between us.
Apart from this it is mainly Word & Excel plus video editing via Adobe Premier.
What type and size should I now buy? How many Gigs? What programs can I expect to get included and how will I transfer my existing programs and data to the new one? I am inclined to go to John Lewis, is this recommended?
That’s quite a lot of questions, I know, but any guidance would be really appreciated.

Does it have to be portable ? Tastes differ I know but I dislike laptops, would always prefer a desktop.

Aside from that I'd try to match your colleague's computer for compatibility.

You reinstall your applications from the installation disks. Data you may need to copy over.
