I have downloaded a file MKV which will not play on my CD convertor ,can you please explain how

What do you mean .. CD Converter?
An mkv will play ok (it is a 'container' for various formats .. often mpeg or avi)
Can you play it at all? If so you have a suitable splitter codec on your system. If not .. try installing the Haali mkv splitter codec from here ... (latest version)
