My husband has a long held wish to buy himself a canoe/kayak and go happily paddling along the local river. What is the difference between a canoe and a kayak? Is one easier to paddle than the other? He has this idea that if he gets a two man then I will join him on his trips. If there is anyone out there with experience of either (or both) I would be interested to hear from you.

The difference between canoeing and kayaking is that with canoeing you kneel, facing forward, and paddle using a single bladed paddle. You are the one in complete control of your canoe, but it takes skill and practice to get it right. For beginners, it is not always easy to learn.

When a person kayaks, they sit with their legs out in front of them and paddle facing forward using a paddle with more than one blade. The muscles you use to operate a kayak are much different compared to a canoe and beginners should also take the time practice and learn before thinking they can just kayak anywhere. There is a lot to learn and consider when kayaking.

When canoeing as opposed to kayaking, you kneel while facing forward and paddle with a single bladed paddle. Although you have complete control over your boat, getting it perfectly requires talent and experience. Learning is not always simple for newcomers.
