In 2000 at the Sydney Olympics
Interesting piece in today's Guardian in the science supplement 'Life' on 'How do I become a synchronised diver'?
Didn't they have it at Barcelona, 1992, I seem to remember some dramatic pictures taken of the event with the city as a back drop
It became an Olympic medal sport in 2000 details here http://www.worldwideaquatics.com/olympics/aboutdiving.htm
A more pertinant question is why did it become an olympic sport (and the same applies to synchronised swimming).
Oh but at least with synchronised diving you can see what they are doing before they go into the water and you can see a skill involved. Synchronised swimming just seems like a dance routine under water.
Perhaps after the "final solution" of the Knights of Christ at Montsegur..where people synchronised themselves diving off the cliff.(humour). Like tennis (how money talks) and tai kwon do( the silliest of all martial arts )and synchronised swimming for example traditions change. Relentless pressure and money are what change he Olympic Format. In passing, tragically in recent years the Olympic games has become a political tool. Ice skating has become mind bending in results. Recent unjustified markings leading to a decision in Athens, eg the US victory over Korea in gymnastic..leaves us all staggered. One thing that is consistently increasing is the cost of fireworks and my wonder at why they cannot think up something else to entertain. There is a huge industry surrounding the games and as well some appalling failures like those who rented at huge sums around the car parks at Atlanta only to find people in general took alternative transport. By the way, I thought Barcelona was just the most wonderful and innovative opening ceremony and it paved the way for the brilliant Australian efforts in opening and closing. Though an Australian, Barcelona will stay always for me a defining moment in the brilliance and artistry, implimentation and concept.Bravo Barcelona, your place in history ought to be trumpeted..but isn't..so here's to you!! Cheers
