This is absurd. I find it genuinely, head-scratchingly astonishing, that people are prepared to suspend belief and common-sense and accept it's OK for transgender 'women' to compete against proper women in any sport that requires speed, strength or both. Two recent examples - Hannah Mouncey, Aussie Rules footballer and Australian Women Handball...

Modem World was spot on Naomi. :))

Are there any trans "women" competing in men's events? If not ... why not?
ynna, I am anti-'woke'.
// What is wrong with that hypothesis? //

too binary, Sqad.
mushroom......but sex IS binary as far as genetic classification goes. I still can understand why a big deal is made of it.
We describe the "women 's 800 metres and the "men's 800 metres, one can't get more binary than that.

I didn't intend to start a row about "woke" etc. To me it's just common sense, how can the, Olympics committee, no less think this can work? In 4 years time it'll be Men as normal and "women" who were once men. All female weightlifters might as well not bother.
"This is so unfair, what chance do women, who were born women, have competing against a woman who was born a man!"

As she will be ranked only fourth at the Games, that must mean three folk have higher rankings and should be able to lift heavier weights.
Transgender athletes have been allowed to compete in the Olympics since 2004.

As this is the first time in seventeen years a transgender athlete has been selected to compete, is it really likely that, 'In 4 years time it'll be Men as normal and "women" who were once men.'?
Could those of us not from the Baltimore ghetto use awake instead of woke?

Asking for a homey.
TCL - It's not just that there will be a T/G woman competing in the weight-lifting, it is that there is a woman somewhere in New Zealand who lost her place in the Kiwi team selection to Laurel Hubbard.
The woman who lost out is Tongan, not a Kiwi.
While I'm not suggesting the transgenderism should be considered a disability, maybe the Paralympics is a better place for Trans athletes. There are multiple versions of the same events there depending on the level of disability, so Trans athletes can compete against one another, thus ending concerns about unfair advantages.
No, this is a story for the moment but it will go away.
Why don't we just ignore sex, gender etc and let anyone compete against anyone?
Why don’t we just sideline real women altogether?
Transgender but they say ‘her’ throughout the whole article.
indeed, Atheist, sports were pretty much invented by men for men (typically for training soldiers, I suspect, though cricket was for bored shepherds and rugby for public schoolboys to let off steam).

Women's events have been permitted for some time as a gesture to the weaker sex - I believe they can compete on equal terms in diving and equestrian events but not much else. And athletes with a mixed range of disabilities now have Paralympics. I don't know how much more niche we can get, though.
//Looks like you are just anti-transgenderist reactionary alongside the likes of JK Rowling et al.//

I don’t think it’s “anti-transgenderist” to be concerned about sports which rely predominantly on physical strength to have men competing in women’s competitions. However unpalatable as it may seem, men and women are different. They have different physiques and men are generally stronger. In many sports this is significant and in weightlifting it is probably most significant of all. Putting a frock on and changing your name from Terry to Tracy does not make a person female as far as that goes.

I’ve really no interest in what gender people adopt. As I said a few weeks ago, the term is largely redundant as far as I can see. But I am concerned that female sport risks being trashed by this nonsense. A male human is a man and will be a father to any children he creates; a female human is a woman and will be a mother if she gives birth. They can call themselves what they like but they should be kept apart in any sport where physical strength is a significant factor (which is most of them).

This business needs to be stopped in its tracks The best thing that female participants can do is to boycott any competition which involves a man masquerading as a woman. They’d better do this before some lunatic comes up with the idea of putting a man and a woman together in a boxing ring. Then it won’t be just a question of who wins the gold medal.
an Australian Olympics swimmer is already boycotting the trials because of misogynistic perverts. The best answer may be to ban males.
