I'm new to golf. Say our four-ball is comprised of 12, 14, 16 and 18 handicappers and today the 12 and 14 will play the 16 and 18. How do you calculate shots 'given'?

Are you playing better ball - if so it's 90% of the handicap I believe....

If it's a stableford, then its 75% with strokes deducted at each hole according to the Stroke Index of the course.
Shots given are by the lowest handicap player. So the 12 handicapper gives 2 shots to the 14 handicapper, 4 to the 16 and 6 to the 18. The holes these are taken on are given by the course scorecard; the lowest stroke index holes.

So for example on the stroke index 5 hole the 18 handicapper would get a shot and nobody else would. On the stroke index 1 hole, the 14, 16 and 18 handicappers would each get a shot.
