Overall Wales deserved the win, although rather ironically, England's attack was better than Wales's. I wonder what the score would have been were it not for the two wrong tries. Overall Wales deserved the win, although rather ironically, England's attack was better than Wales's.
I wonder what the score would have been were it not for the two wrong tries.
The first try was an utter disgrace. To tell the Captain to have a word with his team, to call time off, to have water carriers on the field, and then not provide any time to re-set, absolutely gifted Wales the try - at that point Wales were playing with 16 men.
Without doubt the second try was from a knock-on - it just was.
England's discipline was disgraceful - over 20 pens!!!
I'm getting thoroughly peed-off with all this kicking - I played club rugby for the better part of 20 years, and I've always always felt it's better to have possession of the ball.

I agree Deskdiary way to much kicking in many games these days. That is why I like the Exeter Chiefs my local teams way of playing just like the Barbarians. Very rarely do they take a kick at goal. It is nearly always kicked towards the corner flag for a throw in. It keeps the game flowing. I know in internationals you can't always do it but ball in hand many teams are much better.
Personally I think that pitch was unsuitable for rugby :-)

When the score’s 40-24 there has to be more in it than one admittedly very poor bit of refereeing.

Agree about the constant kicking - especially the pointless and inevitable 'box kick'. What is the point in winning the ball at a scrum (which will have taken an age to set), and then just kicking it back to the opposition?
Used to be that if a team won the ball at a scrum - and they really did have to win it, as squint put-ins were not allowed as they are today - the scrum-half would whip it out to the fly-half to instigate an attack. Oh, if only.

TTT, Wales followed the refs instructions so no wrong doing on their part. Bent tries sounds like Wales cheated and that didn't happen. The ref made the mistakes not Wales. Would there have been so many talking about this if it had been the other way around? The ref has been in charge of many matches for over 10 years so not a new boy. He has now admitted that he made mistakes in the game so at least he knows and hopefully will learn from it.

the ref telling a captain to have a word with his team doesn't entitle him to call a huddle, stand around, chatting and having a drink until the water carriers decide to leave. (They shouldn't be there in the first place, the ref hadn't called a drinks break.) The ref decides how long is long enough - the fact that England players were already strolling back to their positions would be evidence that the conference season was over - and calls time on.
England were sloppy. They assumed a kick at goal would be taken, though Wales hadn't signalled one, they turned their backs on their opponents and on the ref, and figured that the water carriers decided when play restarted. Schoolboy errors.

Some people don't seem to agree with Nigel either so I think it will be a talking point for some time and yes I think Nigel is the best referee there has been in Rugby. It does show that even experienced refs can make mistakes and Pascal Gauzere has been refereeing internationals for over 10 years. I have even known Nigel to make a mistake and go into the dressing room after the game to apologise.
