brendan, I have tried (with the help of Google) to find an answer for you but have failed. I hope that someone else can help.
It might help if we knew the name of the race.

My dad would know the answer but he's no longer around for me to ask him.
Not Fireside Chat. In that article, Mill Reef beats Fireside Chat. Mill Reef only lost twice. As a 2year old to My Swallow and as a 3 year old to Brigadier Gerard in 2000 Guineas.
Could have been a jump horse.

14 Pounds sound a lot though.
I think that this might be a cryptic clue rather than factual. 14 pounds = 1 stone so if you can find the name of one of his more than 4,000 winners that includes the word stone - I can’t - then maybe we would be on the right track. You have intrigued me now so I will carry on looking.
Reading this from paragraph from an article suggets we narrow it down to one of his 1957 rides?

One day he told of the time when the war on weight became total. "I was down in the south of France in February," he recalled. "On the scales I was 11 stone. When I got back to England I worked and worked but was still pushing nine stone at the Lincoln meeting in March, was cheating to do 8st 8lb at the Craven in April. I thought it would never come off. But we had some winners. It was the year of Crepello, 1957 and," he added with one of the most cold blooded bits of self-denying understatement you will ever hear, "I never let it go up again." He was no longer a thin man with a fat man trying to get out.
It’s not a cryptic clue, it’s fact. Of course the OP could have helped by giving the full question, which gave the names of 4 horses as options!
:-)
Oh goodness! And the answer is?
Please let us know the answer if you find it. Thanks.
Have spent ages trying to get this but no luck!
angie, can you please give us the names of the 4 horses which are the options?
I think the quiz closed yesterday, so I wouldn't worry any longer. Would have been good if the OP had quoted the closing date as well.
I'm not worried, just inquisitive!
Anyone?
I think it was Dusty Carpets, As far as I know it was ever beaten
If four alternatives were given but not disclosed by the OP it doesn't deserve further consideration - in my opinion.
That's a big IF...why doesn't angie55 just tell us the answer? (if there is an answer)
That's a very good question , I like others spent a long time searching when this was first posted.
