Watching Neighbourhood Blues on BBC this morning, it was upsetting to see an elderly couple in shock about their house being robbed, and reminded me of the 3 times I have experienced it, and never forgotten.

The first time was when I was about 11yrs old, living in Manchester, and arriving home from school.
As my mother & father worked, I had a a key around my neck on a piece of string, common in those days.

When I walked in the house, the sitting room window was open, there was the empty electric & gas meters on the floor, and human poo.
I remember crying, and rushing across the road to our neighbour Mrs Garret, (still remember her name after 62 yrs), what a shock.

The other 2 were when I had pubs in London & Dover, where they emptied the 5 ciggy machines of money & cigs, fruit machines, and space invader consoles, and in Dover, wines, spirits & cigs.

In a way, Im glad I didn't hear them, as my wife & children were upstairs with me asleep, so anything could have happened, if I had gone downstairs.

Just shows you how you never forget, and a horrible feeling I cant explain, but now retired I have CCTV, and my front & back doors are alarmed at home.

Just the once. We'd just moved into a large, really run down house and got an Alarm Co to come and quote; accepted the quote and they said they'd be round on the following Tuesday. On Monday they phoned to say couldn't make Tuesday but will do it Thursday. We got burgled on the Wednesday. Strange or what? Couldn't prove anything and I got a new Stereo system from the insurance.
Not a nice feeling though.
Yes.
The cops were great though ...they warned me that when they returned to question me after sorting out my neighbour (the burglar) if I admitted to giving him a good hiding they would have to arrest me.
I caught up with him and gave him a good hiding, the police paid me a visit

Me 'I have no idea what you are talking about'

Police 'Ok, we only have his word for it so I think that is the end of it'

And it was.

Yes...while we slept (me and the children) and he went through every room in the house. It really shook me up.

He got 4.5 years for mine and other burglaries in the area.
No I've never been burgled. I went shopping once for Christmas pressies and lots of nice food from M&S and when I wasn't looking someone picked up all my shopping bags and stole them.

My aunt and uncle were burgled twice at Christmas time after winning over 1.5 mil on the pools. They stole all the twins' presents and even stole a huge grandfather clock. The police seemed to think it might have been something to do with the company who'd installed double glazing around their new property as the glass panes were just taken out with considerable ease when the place was burgled.
Yes a very long time ago in a flat where I used to live, I was away for the weekend and returned to find my front door smashed in and (at the time) A rather expensive Electronic keyboard that had a eight track sequencer and the full job lot perfect for writing compositions on.
And this lets you know how long ago it was an Amiga 1200 and a quilt cover. Finger prints where taken etc... I had my suspicions but nothing came of it, I wasn't insured either.
Once...just after we moved to Canada and on our first evening out with new friends...
Arrived home to a huge footprint on our splintered back door....
When the police arrived they had their hands on their guns and were followed in by a cat.....
Gosh.....you have police cats...I said....they have dogs in England...

The house had been searched but the only thing missing was a pair of oven gloves....not that I'd miss those really.....
Money....cameras etc had been left....
One of the tipped out bedroom drawers exposed a packet of laxatives.....
Well, gee Ma'm....you were real lucky they didn't take those.....said the Canadian policeman.....nice chaps....

The next day they phoned and told me they thought the burglars had been looking for papers to do with MrG's work....which made sense....and that they would probably come back so be wary...... :-)
We lived in a remote country location and had four huge orchids in pots stolen from our verandah. Pretty sure we know who stole them but how does one prove it? A few days before we realised they were gone we had found the business card of a county weed inspector inexplicably lying on the drive way. He was well known as an avid orchid collector.

Another time a "thunder egg" (rhyolitic geode) disappeared from the verandah, and bizarrely, a frozen chicken was also taken from our freezer. This was before we locked our doors when we were out.
