This new legislation isn't perfect but its got to be a good start.
I see people smoking in cars with their kids all the time ! But they mostly appear to the same sort of people, the ones who are now left smoking, when most people have quit. These people are going to be the hardest to persuade, if they still think its OK to smoke in small confined spaces with their kids.
Common sense obviously is not one of their "specialist subjects" !

Yes it is a wonder why the legislation is necessary. But when you look around it comes as no surprise. People feed all sorts of junk to their children on a regular basis causing similar long term harm.
It's already an offence to smoke in company vehicles. How many people pay attention to that? Unfortunately it will be yet another law that descends into disrepute (rather like that of using a mobile phone whilst driving). Like that offence a very small proportion of those guilty of it will be caught. Those that are will not have £50 on the them to pay the "on the spot" fine (a misnomer if ever there was one). Bailiffs will be instructed to exeecute a distress warrant (by which time the sum due will have risen to several hundred).

It’s not really true that in Wales everything is bilingual, Mikey.
In some areas less than 10% of people speak any Welsh and few places have more than 50% Welsh speaking. Overall not more than around half a million people in Wales – less than one in five - speak Welsh. It is not easy to find out how many people speak Welsh and nothing else but I suspect they are few and far between. Huge sums are expended on bilingual signage and documentation. Recently public cash has been spent “encouraging” people to speak language to ensure it does not die. Nonetheless between the 2001 and 2011 censuses the numbers speaking the language actually declined.
In these straitened times it is surely a complete waste of money supporting to such a large degree a language that so few people speak. If they want to speak a foreign language then that’s fine but they should not expect large sums of taxpayers’ dosh to be shelled out supporting a language just “so that it does not die”. It simply cannot be justified.
