I've had my Brashers for over 10 years now and still love them. http://www.brasher.co.uk/

Aren't they like running shoes?

You should go into a shop where they know what they're talking about, and get a pair that are right for your feet, and for the type of use to which you will put them?
If you are planning on a hiking holiday, I would get the new boots well in advance and break them in gradually, to avoid discomfort and blisters, which could happen if you wear them for the first time on you're walk.
I think boots that breath are a God-send, so I would go for a 'Gortex' material, which is waterproof and breatherble, half the time its bound to be wet!
If the terrain is rough, good ankle support is another good feature to consider.
If you dont want to spend much, Karrimor which you can buy at sports direct are quite good we buy these for the kids as they seem to need a new pair every year

if you want to spend a bit more try "go outdoors"

i got a pair of Berghaus, cost me about £50 (on sale) and they really are the best...Also invest in a good pair of socks
Brian Blessed wangs on about his Salomon Cosmic 4D GTX's but I've seen mixed reviews.

Granddad Grump also recommends two pair of socks - a liner pair and a pair of walking socks
