Sugar Paste Roses - Urgent, Panic Stations Here

I have the unenviable task of making a cake for a rather special anniversary. The main problem is that I should have started on this weeks ago - NOT a week before the event.

I need a crash course in making sugar paste roses because red roses have been requested as the decoration. (The cake is no problem - I can have that made tomorrow and the marzipan etc by the end of the week).

I can't follow the vids on you tube - I need a permanent reference (i can't be doing with rewinding). Can anyone recommend a really good book or website. Or can anyone tell me in words of one syllable how to do it? I'm going to see if I can just buy them from the sugarcraft shop, but failing that, I will buy the pre-coloured icing. What other stuff do I need?

Ooohhh, I didn't know you could get moulds. I thought you had to painstakingly stick each petal on with a little vodka.
I think BM, I would buy the roses ready made. I used to go to Sugarcraft classes so I know it does take lots of practice to make roses, they are one of the more difficult flowers to make. If it's for a special occasion I wouldn't dare risk it by taking a crash course - but I am rather ham fisted, you may pick it up quicker. I made our Silver Wedding cake but that was 20 years ago and never carried on with Sugarcraft. x

Ann - buying them is first choice!

But if I can't get them, having a crack at making them was second choice!

Now it appears that moulds are available which might just do the job.

Final option is just to slap a red ribbon round the cake, get a cake vase to push into it and make a small arrangement with real red roses myself (I can do flower arranging, I just can't make the damn flowers).

(Now if I had actually thought about this weeks ago............)

Yay, Ann, thank you. Didn't realise you could get them online!!!!
Order them soonest though BM - I sent for some for our Ruby Wedding and they arrived smashed, so leave plenty of time in case that happens. Or maybe there is a cake decorating shop in your area?
Thanks for best answer! x

Ann I've just been there to get the board and the box. Wow, just WOW! Amazing shop. They can knock me up something - I just need to confirm design with mater first.
Barmaid, you impress me with your ambitions. :)
(i) voddie or eccles, barmaid...............

(ii) can you send a message to niki - [email protected] - she may be able to steer you in the right direction to a shop near you that sells them.
Cornish Cakeboards do by far and away the best Cakeboards....very smooth edges that don't even need a ribbon - their website is crap (am working on that), but give then a call - 01872 572 548, Monday now.....
Barmaid, is there a specialist cake decorating store anywhere near you? I know it's a bit far but there is one in Edinburgh called the Finishing Touch. They supply all sorts of stuff for cake decorators. Anyway, they sell all sorts of cake decorations including sugar paste roses in all colours, if you'd like I can give you their details but I'm sure there might be somewhere closer to where you live that can help you. To make them yourself you will need specialist modelling paste, and a petal cutter as they are usually made with individual petals. Does it have to be roses? As you can buy flower shaped cutters that you cut out and just apply them to the cake.

Thanks all. Cake is now marzipanned and decoration is ready to go atop when I eventually get round to icing the wretched thing.

I'll post a pic of the finished article.
Patiently waiting to see the end product. ;)
