Some eg. rowers wear them to protect their eyes from flying insects.

I can understanders the Olympians that have to wear them but the ones who wear them as a fashion statement look like plonkers to me.. Arrogant Snags..the true olympians are not arrogant..
Who do you mean? I haven't noticed.
I don't know what you're talking about.
Why do they need so much jewellery as well as sunglasses etc, it's all weight to carry and when races are won and lost by hundreths of a second isn't it better to leave them off.
Daisy, I've rowed for 25 years and have never had a problem with flying insects.
that just shows that you haven't been going fast enough, johnk. Up your rate considerably next time.
Don't rowers travel backwards?
Are you not tired yet Johnk?

insects can be a problem for cyclists.
You haven't rowed in the brilliant, blinding, sunshine of Eton Dorney, johnk ! There must be a suspicion of sponsorship in some cases; other sportsmen are under contract to wear certain brands of goods when competing, regardless of necessity, so why not Olympians?
Do any kind of sunglasses indicate arrogance or is it just certain styles?

Do clip-ons indicate a bit more humility?

And are Reactolite lenses safe?
Baldric ;- Yes
Mick t :- yes
Fred, that might be it, they do need lots of funding just to train enough to get into top flight competition.
LOL - nice one Zeuhl :-)
blimey, remember florence griffiths joyner and her sister, they were well decked out and the nails must have weighed a few extra grams.
Mrs B and myself were talking about this last night. I think it was in the mens 400m semi final. It wouldve been around 8.30pm so no need to wear sunglasses. I'd be worried about them falling off or the gold chains flapping around my face putting me off the race.
One other factor may be that athletes are notoriously superstitious.

If they believe that they only perform well when wearing sunglasses (or whatever) then they will wear them every time.
