Here are some interesting things that will happen today.

1. THE SPEED OF LIGHT

Scientists in Italy (Gran Sasso Research Facility) will give details today of observations recently made at their clever underground research place of particles travelling ... faster than the speed of light!

Breaking the speed limit supposedly imposed by the Special Theory of Relativity.

Clever stuff, huh?

2. AMANDA KNOX

Closing speeches in the Appeal begin today.

The Appeal has destroyed every last scrap of the (supposed) "evidence".

I've read a few books about the evidence in this case:

The Murder of Meredith Kercher - Gary King
Darkness Descending - Paul Russell and Luciano Garofano
The Monster of Perugia - Mark Waterbury
The Study Abroad Murder - Will Savive
Angel Face - Barbie Latza Nadeau
Injustice in Perugia - Bruce Fisher
Walking With Amanda - Florisbela Inocencio
Murder In Italy - Candace Dempsey
The Trials of Amanda Knox - Nina Burleigh

Of these, the most viciously hostile to Amanda and Rafaelle was Barbie Nadeau's "Angel Face", which pretty much said "She's a witch ... BURN HER!!"

Well, even the vicious Ms Nadeau now grudgingly concedes that "Too many mistakes were made for this to be a clean conviction".

By this time next week, Amanda and Rafaelle will be on their way home.

3. PLYMOUTH ARGYLE

Try to watch Brighton v Leeds on Sky tonight. We're going to wear green shirts (instead of sky blue) to try to draw attention to the financial plight of Plymouth. While the affluent prima donnas in the Prem are swanning around in their new Bentleys, Plymouth haven't been able to pay their staff or players for ages, and the club might not survive. Spare a thought for them, next time you are watching Chelsea or Man City on the telly.

4. SWITZERLAND

First thing tomorrow, I'm going to visit my lovely BF ... Yaay!! Okay, this one might not actually make the national News, but I think it's jolly.

5. WORLD NETBALL SERIES

Tickets for the World Netball Series (25th-27th November, in Liverpool) are on sale. If you've never seen Netball played at the top level, and you live in the area, you should seriously go to watch. You will not believe how fast the ball flashes around the court. You'll also be surprised at how many times the players collide, and knock each other on to the hard floor. And, of course, they get up and get on with the game. It's a good job some of the more delicate Premiership footballers don't play a physical game like Netball.

Okay, I'm done for now. I have to go to Smelly London shortly, so I thought I'd pack it into one post.

There was summat about the Faster than the Speed of Light on the radio last night.
Re Amanda Knox - I have never been able to understand why her appearances in court show her as not looking remotely distressed or concerned - either she has a watertight alibi, or she really doesn't care. I didn't realise so many books have been written about the case (why?)

If she didn't do it, who did?
Question Author
Boxy

That illustrates what the whole case was about ...

Never mind the evidence, look at her face !

That's the basis on which she was convicted ... she's pretty, and cheerful, so "she must be a murderer". Duuuh!

But, as the Appeal has now shown, there was never a scrap of real evidence.
Question Author
If the "particles" thing is right, then does that mean that Einstein was wrong ??
Come on you Leeds!
I'm sorry that's my only comment.
Question Author
Count ... I wouldn't pin your hopes on Leeds ...

Not at "Fortress Brighton" !

We even gave Liverpool a run for their money.
Yes, I saw the match but it probably took a lot out of them, so I'm looking for 3 points.
Question Author
We just played our Reserves against Liverpool, LOL.

That's almost as plausible as Knox being innocent! :-)
How awful for the Kercher family if AK wins her appeal. It'll leave them in limbo.
Question Author
Why will it be awful for them?

Is it better for the Kerchers if an innocent person is in prison? What sort of people are the Kerchers?

Meredith's murder was terrible. Putting her innocent friend in prison does not make things better. It makes it even worse.

Rudy Guede committed that awful murder on his own, and he is in prison for the murder.

The involvement of Amanda and Rafaelle was a figment of the warped imagination of Prosecutor Mignini, with his imaginary "satanic sex games" theory.

Incidentally, two years ago, Prosecutor Mignini was himself convicted of fabricating false evidence in a case. What had he done? He had prosecuted 40 (!) innocent people, claiming that they had been involved in (wait for it) ... a "satanic sex ritual !!

The man has a wild, and perverted, imagination. He is a throwback to the days of the inquisition.
Crumbs jj, you are obviously following this case closely. I haven't.
JJ I'm sure the Kerchers don't want to see an innocent person in prison but they must feel very let down by the justice system.
Question Author
I have followed the case VERY closely ...

(in contrast with the tabloid reading world, who were completely taken in by the lurid headlines fed to the media by Gulio Mignini).

He is a horrendous person, who could never hold office anywhere but Italy.

He arrested Amanda and Rafaelle before any evidence had been gathered, and he had to save face by making them look guilty.

A phrase he used repeatedly during the trial was that the evidence was "consistent with" Amanda and Rafaelle having been involved.

"Consistent with" is the phrase he uses when the evidence actually proves nothing.

Let me illustrate.

Meredith was killed by knife wounds.

Boxtops owns a knife.

The evidence is therefore consistent with Boxtops being the murderer.

The evidence in the Trial really was that ridiculous.

Here's a tip ... don't go to Italy ... Prosecutor Mignini might well arrest you!
Question Author
ladybirder ...

The Kerchers WERE let down by the Italian justice system.

Horribly let down.

They were let down because the case was ahndled by Prosecutor Mignini, a notoriosly fanciful person, who lets his vivid imagination, and personal ego, ride roughshod over the actual evidence.

And, what is worse, Rudy Guede, who admitted stabbing Meredith, has only been given 16 years because he agreed to plead Guilty and assist in framing Amanda and Rafaelle.

Now THAT is where the Kerchers were truly let down. The vagrant who admits to sticking a knife in their daughter's neck will be free in 8 years, if he behave ... and all because of the ridiculous witch hunt against Amanda.
With regards to 1)

Einstein did not say nothing travels faster than light

This is a very common misconception

The fact that things did not travel faster than light was one of the two observations on which Relativity is built.

There is a very famous experiment called the Michelson-Morely experiment that demonstrated this but it was over 100 years ago

If this new data is right then relativity may have to be modified in a few small areas but the results will need to be confirmed elsewhere first
Question Author
So maybe not quite as newsworthy as I thought ?
Question Author
I've just read the rest of the Guardian article about the particle thing.

Something to do with undermining the principle of cause and effect, and the idea that cause cannot come after effect?

All a bit mind stretching for a Friday.

I need to set off for Smelly London soon.
Not wishing to trivialise, but I think I won't go to Italy with a knife, now JJ's alerted the authorities about me....

Is smelly London part of the journey to Switz, tho, JJ?
with regards to 1, not withstanding what jake has already explained perhaps they are referring to Cherenkov radiation which exceeds C but in certain mediums.
1) i await someone replicating the experiment
2) Who?
3) football is crap
4) i always thought you were gay!
5) i have just ordered tickets for the wheelchair rugby paralympics and i reckon there's a lot of knocking over there too
