train will take you to Manchester Victoria or Oxford Road in about 1hr15mn, with a tram journey to follow of about 10-20mn to Old Trafford, depending on where you land in Manchester.
check journey at http://nw.aimwebsites.co.uk/JourneyPlanner.jsp ?vm_Reset_str=true

It should be possible to drive to Old Trafford in about 1hr15mn, but this assumes no hold-up at the M61/M60 junction, which could (and often does) add an indeterminate time to the journey.
Car is far less hassle, I do it regularly for work. Just watch out for the jams as you hit the M60, as mentioned above. It's a really straight run.
Ah - the eternal question - can we see in to the future?! I tried to get a train from Preston to Liverpool last year only to find that there were no trains at all in Preston as there was a points failure - so I ended up getting a bus. I have made it to central Manchester from where I live (just off the M6/M55 junction) in 45 minutes, but then it has taken much longer when there has been an accident!
