Russian-owned Chelsea Football Club restricted because of Russia's inhuman behaviour over the last 14 days.

But Saudi Arabia-owned Newcastle Football Club are OK in spite of Saudi Arabia turning Yemen into a humanitarian disaster area over the last 10 years.

Usual double standards in high places prevailing again.

I do believe that checks had been made before the Saudi group could buy Newcastle, as in any leader or Military connections. It has been apparently proven that Abramovich has direct connections with Putin.
ish - - not everyone gets caught in the net

Alot I agree depends on whether they look European ( like us) and are near and have cameras

Wagner group ( oh do they play Wagner, no they shoot children and rape women) is in the Ukraine and have been redeployed from Mali where they have been used. All over France - Inter. Ya didnt know that because the beeb doesnt cover it - innit?

Yemen had its go as a Marxist paradise 40 y ago - no cameras at all then !
Cultural differences, Canary, and friends in even higher places.

Arky, the owners of Newcastle United are the PIF (Public Investment Fund), created in 1971 to invest funds on behalf of the Saudi government. And just who is the Chair of the PIF? That's right, Mohammad bin Salman! How this takeover was ever sanctioned is beyond me.
Yes, there may be a hint of sour grapes in my opinion, given Newcastle's ability to buy their way out of trouble. However, i believe my opinion would have been the same even had Burnley not been at the wrong end of the able.
No one stopped Abramovich buying Chelsea either. Now he’s been sanctioned and therefore as Chelsea is is personal property it has to be seized.
If MBS is ever sanctioned the same will happen perhaps although I am not sure that the ownership, just like the war in Yemen, is as clear cut as the case here
Nothing to do with double standards in football anyway, as this is not something controlled by football
I imagine Canary is pointing to government double standards. To answer a now deleted post, the Saudis have been bombing Sanaa recently, part of a proxy war against Iran; I expect the people of Sanaa feel much the same as the people of Kyiv.
gawd help us you are not allowed to challenge the Putinistas now!
well, perhaps if you stopped calling everyone you disagreed with a Punista?
what's a punista?
well he's going out of his way to defend the Russian action in Ukraine, what would you call him?
What are you suggesting?
That Newcastle should be seized because Chelsea has been?
Or that we should not sanction Abramovich because we haven’t sanctioned MBS?
That’s the attitude of “look both ways before crossing our legs :-)
///That Newcastle should be seized because Chelsea has been?///

well, why not? I'm not convinced that cutting off the funds of a club owner, while preventing him selling the club, is going to benefit either Ukraine or Chelsea, but if it's thought a proper matter of principle, why doesn't the same apply to Newcastle?
Because they haven’t just decided to target a football club.
They have sanctioned an oligarch and seized what assets they can.
This is not a football issue
ich haven't you realised yet, canary is a total 5Cer and jno is almost as bad. Those two and others have got no idea of what is happening here, they just want to have a go at their own side.
All this “whataboutery” is misplaced.
If we adhered to that we’d never take a stand against anything.
It’s about time our government took the gloves off and engaged in a few eye catching but nonlethal hits of our own.
This is one and well done I say
Anyway I’m sure canary will still be supporting Norwich tonight and deploring the inevitable “Abramovich” chants.
I’m fairness i can understand that: what was unforgivable was to do it during the clapping at Burnley at the weekend
and as some clever legal commentator said
now that it has been seized - he cant sell it!

after seizure he cant sell it - only the commissioner in seizures and convulsions can ( or whomever)

BUT since the humourless faceless commissioner has closed the shop disappointing countless footaballl crazy kids, I might have sold the sports store - last week so it cd continue trading ....
// you disagreed with a Punista?//
a punista ! seems a lot of confusion today - gunsmoke probably.

my brilliant piece on Gazza when s/o meant Gaza got zapped. Too rich and literary probably

I agree with Ich that the me-too-ism seems a bit strained
