Just a heads-up for anyone that might not be sure of the veracity of an email that looks similar to -

"HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) - REFUND CONFIRMATION"

Hello email address here,
I am sending this email to announce that after the last annual calculation of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax return of £221.58. In order to receive your refund, you need to create a Government Gateway account.

This is a phishing scam. DON'T click any links therein & forward the email in its entirety to -

[email protected]

More info here -

Hope this helps :-)

allen - you're right, the instant reaction of some might be "Oh goody!" & to follow the instructions just because it's from what looks at first glance to be a genuine government department.

I guess the more reports they get, the greater the chance of finding these ne'er-do-wells!

You're welcome, Mamya :-)
HMRC Does NOT notify you of refunds via email !! That is all you have to remember, they are ALL scams no matter what they look like!
Yes, we know that but not everyone is as savvy - so a heads up never goes amiss.
Such information is always worth knowing about.
Just had one today...and it landed in my outlook "focused" account...rather than junk.
Had me all excited for about five seconds.
I googled government gateway account out of curiosity, and got the impression it's for businesses. I am not a business. :-)
