Yet another Oblivion question

cant seem to get on any oblivion walkthrough sites at work so will pose this question to the AB :-)

The mission where you buy Benirus Mansion and have to kill all the ghosts. In the basement the old man is on the altar and you resurrect him. One hell of a scrap, he keeps whooping my ass. I've been using the Chillrend and only have flare as a destruction spell. I've not developed my magic side really as concentrated on the weapon combat side.

Do I need to learn and utilise certain spells to take him out?
