I just happened to mention to my husband (law his specialist subject) that someone on Answerbank speaks in tongues.

His lazy response?

"What does he do? Type asterisks, ampersands and an assortment of other symbols that no one can decipher?"

Well, it made me laugh.

Okay. I'll get my coat. :o)

The Holy Ghost has a lot to answer for. Going down on people and turning their words into gibberish.

No names Naz - but he did make me laugh. It just about sums the claim of speaking in tongues up..
I've seen people speaking in tongues at first hand. It really is nonsense in every sense of the word.

can you expand?
Yes, I went to an evangelical Christian meeting a while back, the kind where this type of thing is encouraged. The bloke next to me suddenly started spouting gibberish and and gazing heavenwards, palms upward.
I just thought, 'oh dear'.

............. But I've got to ask ......... well, come on, I have to, don't I? ........ So why .... oh why....did you go?

It was a long time ago - I was young and impressionable, I needed the money.
I had a friend that I hadn't seen for a while, and in the meantime he'd become born again. He invited me to this thing - he was a nice bloke and I was curious so I went along.
Needless to say the holy spirit didn't go down on me (as sandyroe puts it), so I didn't go back again.
I've watched them speaking in tongues. On quite a few occasions. I don't get it...I really don't understand.
Is it a 'born again' thing??
ludwig...your answer wasn't there when I posted...

Ludwig, Haaa! Oh, I do wish you - and Sandy - would re-phrase that. Tut! :o)

Actually, I would like to see it happening in real life. I mean - come on - if you suddenly started speaking gibberish you would instantly seek psychiatric help - wouldn't you? I damned sure I would. It would scare the hell out of me!
I think it's all based on a particular passage or prophecy in the bible - perhaps someone who knows can confirm that.
I'm off to bed now but can you pass this message on to your hubby Naomi -£$&&%^*£*^()£")^"(*^*&*^^^^&&&£*£***£*
*$$$$@@@@@@!!'

Ludwig, you are right. It's mentioned in the bible quite a few times. By the way, I didn't pass your message on. You don't really expect a nice girl like me to use language like that do you?! :o)

Eddie, why would you think of going to such a church? I didn't think you 'did' religion.

tamborine, I had to stop that after a few seconds. I couldn't watch it. That's the sort of thing that really fills me with horror - it's sheer madness in action. Scary stuff!!
