But please,
Just one Christian/Religionist here,
Please explain to me the doctrine of eternal torment.

I dont care what your belief is.
Catholic, Muslim, Protestant, Evangelical or otherwise..

How on Gods Earth can you justify an eternal torture for those not of your faith?

This is one thing that I really dont get or understand.
I wouldnt want even the bloody Yorkshire Ripper or Ian Brady to be burned alive eternally.
But they are lumped together with Aunty Ethel and Uncle Bob because they once had a bonk before they were married.
Or some poor sod found himself on his uppers (as happened many times today)
But because they dont believe as you do, they are going to burn!

If the greatest minds in history can't supply a satisfactory answer to your earnest questioning what makes you think that this retirement home for the bumptious can?

Point taken....

On toast...for supper!
Douglas, //If the greatest minds in history can't supply a satisfactory answer to your earnest questioning…//

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick. As I read it Nailit isn't asking for a deep, theological explanation, but one on a personal level. He is asking how people of religion, convinced that they are to be 'saved' are content with the notion that they will reside happily in heaven whilst their loved ones are burning in the other place very often for what most of us would consider normal human behaviour, his example being Aunty Ethel and Uncle Bob having once had a bonk before they were married. A very reasonable question that I don't believe has ever been satisfactorily answered here.
naomi, both you & nailit seem stuck on reducing religion to the level of the nursery.
What makes you think that?
So childish, move on!
Why childish, khandro? It's a reasonable question. Would you be happy knowing your wife and children were burning in hell?
\\ So childish, move on!//
That should be addressed to the religious people, a child moves on from having an imaginary friend.
Khandro seems to think that such questions shouldn't be asked because religion is far too lofty for that. Beyond criticism perhaps?
Beyond criticism perhaps?

From the hoi polloi, certainly. It's like water off a duck's back.
You're stuck for answers again, Khandro. :o)
No I'm fine thanks, but I wonder if you & nailit aren't getting a bit stuck for questions.
Nailit and I have asked questions. Why won't you answer them?
Why don't people think before asking stupid questions?
What haven't we thought about?
The idea of 'eternal torment' is simply something dreamed up by men to create and secure power over more naive people.

There is no mystery really.

If you really do want a mystery, why not explore genuine mysteries around us like -

Why does anyone think Michael McIntyre Is Funny?

Why are they still allowed to make Are You Being Framed?

Why do right-wing newspapers still try and peddle Samantha Cameron as someone we should consider attractive?

Why don't fervents listen?

The list goes on - but the notion of 'eternal torment' has a simple rational explanation - fear and power.
We have been done this road many times before.
Other than saying that God has given everyone a choice to choose Jesus in this life and thus escape eternal torment in the next, there is really no pint in trying to answer Nailit.
He wont accept Christian apologetics and will just come back with exactly the same thread in a few months time
fiveleaves, I take it you're quite happy with the notion that a God you worship might not be satisfied with the life you lead during your time on earth and you also end up in eternal torment?

There are not many things that you and nailit share in common, but that is certainly one of them.
