Others have lost confidence in religion. - look how church have behaved over the centuries,” “people have turned away from them because they no longer - believe in them as a moral arbiter.” . “If you look at the way the true Religion - is to - restricted .??

I was brought up to believe in God but now have seen the light :)
Then you've read something into MallyJ's post that I can't see woofgang.
Organised religion is just another Power Base designed to control the plebs. Thanks to the spread of education and knowledge, more and more people are realising this and abandoning religion.

Morality is a totally separate issue, one much abused by Religious Leaders.
deskdiary "If people need an invented ancient 'god' in their lives in order to behave well towards others then they are just not worth anything"
Nope - don't see it.

I think only MallyJ is in a position to explain what she meant.
I think it’s kindness and compassion (to quote Woofgang) that are dying out.

And often these virtues go along with a belief in the elevation of humanity (or religion, if you like).

Often, not always. Most of the world’s religions have shown themselves capable of dreadful acts of unkindness and cruelty - even my own path, Buddhism, has lapsed into violence - curiously, more so when it has diverted from Buddha’s teachings and seen itself as a ‘religion’.
it's about and always was..bu@s on seats, church does love money
and they have a lot of it, so much for the common man, 'Please, sir, I want some more.'
Are you meaning what has been happening in Myanmar Allen?
Yes, ladybirder - and Sri Lanka during the civil war.

But as all the ‘big’ religions have deviated so far from their founding principles, I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised.
Organised religion is truly perverted.
Church attendance is dying out.

Allen, I don't think that kindness and compassion are dying out

Not sure religious followers have a monopoly on kindness and compassion, in fact all around the world horrendous acts are committed in the name of religion
I hope religion is dying out, mankind cannot progress until we shake of this ridiculous mumbo jumbo.
No

Has anybody on here said that it is?
Woofgang. Sorry, I quoted you out of context.

I hope you’re right, in not seeing kindness and compassion dying. I think society as a whole is more ‘hard nosed’, although many individuals are still kind. I think I’ve seen the rise of selfishness over my 70+ years.

I think what we "see" greatly depends on what the media reports. Don't forget that Band Aid, Live Aid and Red Nose Day all kicked off in the 80's, the era of the yuppy and Gordon Gecko.

Those are nothing to do with each other. Religion, I think, probably will eventually die out. Morals never will, as they are instinctive, although everyone might not agree on what is right...
I don't agree, woof, that the ends always justify the means. People will use religion as an excuse do to good or evil, entirely depending on their character. If they are literally being controlled by religion, they can be just as easily persuaded to do the opposite. Religion just removes the personal responsibility, which is never going to be good
