A bit of a hiatus (lockdown, work, personal things etc) but finally read the Bible all the way through, again!
How on earth can anybody read this mess and believe its the word of (any) God is beyond me.
Read about a 3rd of it and left of for a bit. (TBH the unrelenting slaughter was getting to me a bit) Picked up again and read whole books at a time. The contradictions alone had me questioning, never mind the bloodshed etc (That was before I got to the new Testament).
Then the New Testament accounts doent agree with each other.
I tried.
The bible is a crock.
Different books, Different authors, different theologies.

Modern church...
We'll try to reconcile them all and call it the bible...
Good luck with that one.

Alas?
There are 613 laws.
Do you expect me to be an expert on all of them?
This remains a friendly thread.
Any would it be otherwise?

No! I was only asking about one.
Is moral to kill your wife because she didnt bleed on her wedding night?
No need to be an expert on biblical history. Its a moral question.
My own (and your) answer is no, its not moral to kill your wife because she didnt bleed on the bedsheet the first time you had sex.
So why try to justify it?
I am simply saying that in that time, in that culture, it was accepted practice.
We can pick holes in any historical culture by comparing it to our idea of morality.

Look at Nelsons navy. Dozens of lashes for the least of disciplinary offences.

The middle ages, trial by fire. Ducking in water to determine witchcraft.

Kneecapping in Northern Ireland for betraying the community.

The list is endless.

Well it would be, it was ordained by God.
(According to the Bible anyway)

So is stoning your newlywed wife to death for not bleeding on your wedding night moral?
Question Author
Im not questioning Nelsons navy, the middle ages, or northern Ireland Knee capping.
Im questioning your Bible.
What moral standard are you using to measure the so called offence.

Our moral standard, or the moral standard applied and recognised by the whole nation of Israel thousands of years ago.
Question Author

What do you mean ''So called'' offence?
Its clearly an offence worthy of death according to Deuteronomy 22.
You need to consult an anthropologist.
Question Author
//You need to consult an anthropologist//
Why?
Im asking a bible believer about his morals. Why would I ask an anthropologist?
Question Author
Im also asking about the Bible.
Who better to ask than someone who believes it?
If I have a problem with my car I wouldnt consult my dentist about it would I?
I could talk all night, but I do have a life, a family to talk to, a TV to watch. You get the idea.
Stoning your newlywed wife to death for not bleeding on your wedding night is not at all moral.

The Bible is a set of stories that meant a lot more to people around the time they were written, we now know how the hymen works and all the reasons why a virgin may not bleed on her first sexual encounter.

I am 66 and throughout my upbringing I have never been taught to act out scenes from the Bible in my day to day life as if they were relevant today.

That includes the teachings of my parents, teachers and Priests too.
Thank you Mamya.
I'm off to talk to family too x
I haven't followed this thread...just clicked on the last page to see why it is still going.

I have to say that is not what I expected to read.
OOps I must be tired. I read 'immoral'

Just as well Mamy, else youd be in prison nowadays....
True, I'd be able to throw a good buffet with drink to follow with little outlay too - still, that was then and this is now.
I think mine is a better example, the one of the baby condemned by God to die a lingering death in order to punish the father. That wasn’t a ‘law’. God did that. Is that moral?
