Tonight's been a bit different. Ive been to church for the first time in decades.
Not to hear a sermon or to worship but to see a Christian comedian. (as to why I attended?...explanation available upon request).
To be fair, he was actually quiet funny and the evangelism bit at the end wasn't unexpected. No collection plate either which was a bonus as I had nothing in my pockets and I wasn't about to crack my wallet open.

Upon getting home I decided to view a few you-tubes vids of him (because I found him genuinely funny)
But this one got me back in the real world (as opposed to the world of comedy or religion...is there a difference?)

Between the 16.00 mark and the 17.00 mark he completely dismisses the OT killings, bloodshed and violence and makes a joke of it. He then turns it into some morality tale!

I just don't get why or how the Old Testament is disregarded and yet is considered a part of the Christian canon??
Is killing people ok as long as God asks you to do it?

//Nailit - why do you say the OT is disregarded?//
Because you (and other Christians, DO disregard large portions of it. I'll tell you *exactly* what you disregard if you wish.

//Nailit - You mention the OT killings.
First reading - shocking.
Look deeper and you find justice.//

I have looked deeper. And there is no justice in the senseless killing of women children, babies and animals.
You are the one telling me that there is justice in such things.
So show me the justice?
As you said yesterday @ 21:44, we shouldn't shy away from the burden of proof and anything less is simply an opinion.
The Canaanite were warned for four hundred year to stop sacrificing their own children to pacify the I idol that held out his red hot arms to receive. The poor children. God had enough and destroyed them all.
So Gods answer to violence is more violence and the church constantly tells us God is love, how does that work then?
Question Author
//The Canaanite were warned for four hundred year to stop sacrificing their own children to pacify the I idol that held out his red hot arms to receive. The poor children.//
So God ordered the destruction and death of the Canaanites INCLUDING the children?
And God quiet gladly accepted the sacrifice of Jephthah’s daughter
(Judges 11). And it was not only the Canaanites that were destroyed, it was numerous tribes (and their women, children and ,often, animals) that were ordered to be destroyed without mercy.

So, again, show me the justice (or even the rationale) in killing babies?
On second thoughts don't bother. Your own Bible tells me why. Its because it makes people happy.

//Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones// Psalm 137:9

First reading quite shocking.
Dig deeper and it is not an instruction, but an emotional response to the enemies of Israel.
This is what I mean about researching the Bible rather than just reading it cover to cover and making misplaced judgements.
" This is what I mean about researching the Bible rather than just reading it cover to cover and making misplaced judgements."

What research did you actually do? how do you know your research isn't somebody else's misplaced judgements? do you ever answer questions?
Question Author
Don't bother Vulcan,
I gave up after reading that last inane reply about an 'emotional resonse' as an excuse for killing babies etc.
I don't get any of this. Religion should be officially classified as a passtime or hobby and not given any kind of relevance.
Has this been zapped?
The "good news" (hey, Theland, there's a New Covenant reference there - get it?) is that no society which has inherited the Judaic-Christian tradition believes in the self-contradictory notion that the God of Eternity lost patience with the Amorites (after, wait for it, four hundred years) because they practised child sacrifice and sent in the moral police to kill them and their children. When I say nobody[i I do exclude William Lane Craig and possibly (but I hope not) Theland. (Is Theland in better health than he was two weeks ago?).

Nor have any [i]moder] legislatures in societies culturally derived in part from that Judaic-Christian tradition adopted (with obvious exceptions like murder and theft) either the sanctions or the punishments prescribed in Deuteronomy and Leviticus. So if you're gay or transgender, or you're a man and want to dress in a frock and you happen to live in the Middle East you're better off living in Israel. Put it it another way: you don't want to live in any other Middle Eastern state.
Some atheists are more interested in self aggrandisement, and ignore questions like the origin of the universe, abiogenesis, the Cambrian Explosion, the ridiculous notion of macro natural selection, and ignore what the Bible says about God which explains all.

//and ignore questions like the origin of the universe, abiogenesis, the Cambrian Explosion, the ridiculous notion of macro natural selection//

Who exactly ignores these questions Theland? What do you think science is about?
So what do YOU say?
In the past you have been more concerned about sowing two crops side by side, or weaving two textiles together.
Really?
But no suggestions to the big questions.

//In the past you have been more concerned about sowing two crops side by side, or weaving two textiles together//

Also been concerned with other equally absurd Biblical injunctions such as stoning to death (your own) disobedient children and people who pick up sticks on the sabbath, rape victims having to marry their rapist, menstruating women been considered unclean, rules about slavery etc. Strange that you didn't mention those!

//But no suggestions to the big questions//
No, none at all. Unlike you, Im happy to say that I don't know until evidence is forthcoming.
You have the wrong end of many sticks.
Theland, //But no suggestions to the big questions. //

Suggestions are fine but you don't suggest - you claim fact.

Much like every other 'believer' on the planet naomi…Muslim, Scientologist, Hindu, Mormom etc.
What Theland fails to comprehend is that science is ever evolving to accommodate new information as it becomes available. Unlike a static set of 'beliefs'
that was beautiful nailit, thankyou. My darling bedbound son said he didnt miss the outside life as he could feel Jesus' arms wrapped around him. My son is 48 & well travelled globally & to trust faith for a purpose will pull him thru.
