it is too early to tell

( Chou en Lai on the effects of the French Revolution (he was referring to les evenements de soixante-buit apparently)
The first move was made with their Muslim concentration camps. **** China.
//“Yes, that's a re-education school,” another shopkeeper agreed.

“There are tens of thousands of people there now. They have some problems with their thoughts.”//

Well can't argue with that.

What proof is there though it is soley Muslims, or even any? China is well known for 're educating' subversives so could be, and probably is, anyone who falls foul of the regime.

Chin, being a communist state dislikes religion or any freedom to practice it. Comrade COB must be looking at this with interest.
I thnk if the leaders of islam in China want to do it then its possible but it may split them from say Arabic Islam. There is a long history of change and division on organised religions....in Islam originally there were no Sunni and Shia sects as I understand it.
//can it be done? //

No. Suppression isn't modification.
As Chinese communism specifically forbids any form of religion, I don't see how.
Question Author
Difficult to enact maybe, but some, including the scholar Hamad Abdel-Samad (if you don't know him, he's worth checking out) has said, there is a need for what he calls a "post-Koranic Islam".

The Qur’an, for example, clearly states that the hands of thieves should be cut off (Q 5:38), and that fornicators are to be publicly flogged with one-hundred lashes (Q 24:2). It demands that Christians and Jews be fought and brought under submission for their beliefs (Q 9:29). It states that the punishment for “those who sow corruption on the Earth”, which is open to much interpretation (by Muslims) and can include an awful lot of people, are to be executed, crucified, or mutilated (Q 5:33). You may cry that these things are not acted on, but they all have and quite recently too in the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
These and many more supposed edicts from Allah really need to be re-assessed, IMO
They want to suppress it. Totalitarian regimes have never liked religion, because they promote obedience to a different set of rules and a higher power than the regime, and as such represent a threat to it.
