This is a serious question.

Could any of the religious AB members please explain in words that I can understand or without pasting lengthy gibberish tomes, why their Almighty has seen fit to kill over 2000 people in Nepal?

*** happens.
Why blame God, it was a force of nature, an earthquake
I am not religious. Though I believe there is a suprem power over all creation.
This power, God if you will is pure love. Though this does not mean an intervention God. Terrible things happen, man made or otherwise. God will not cherry pick the righteous. The Godhead is our source and our destiny. We cannot comprehend this source our brains are not developed enough. So don't seek for a reason for natural events, you will chase yourself silly. There is more to this life than can be imagined. As on your passing, you will discover.
I'm sure it is all part of Gods plan! whatever that may be. If there is a God, he sure is an evil son of a ***!!
david small... >God if you will is pure love< You are clearly talking about a different God than the one that is written about in the Bible.
However you imagine the Earth to have been created - supreme being/big bang or some other way, it is a fragile natural thing.

Plates that move, tides that run wild at times, nature is savage.
A question then for those who don't 'believe' - whose fault is it?
david small, you say our brain is not developed enough to comprehend, and you also state god is love. If you cannot comprehend how do you know god is love?
To remind you are not immortal and for you to give thanks by aiding those in need.
The bible is not for me, except as a historical and psychological study. As to A supreme being, consisting of pure love. My opinion is based upon a spiritual experince so intense it left my feeble brain far behind. this is NOT a religious experience, it is a spiritual one. Big difference.

yup well spotted

If you wanna know how the Jews looked on God in 1BC then read
Anthony Phillips God BC ISBN-10: 0192812114

and yes the sadducees and pharisees had a different idea about God than does say Pope Francis erm 2000 y later
Mamyalynne. It was caused by the forces of nature. These things happen!
I agree with you Ratter.
One theological answer was /is: He was unable to prevent it

You could have a completely pre-determined world. Muslims do. When 1000 ,men were crushed to death during one Hajj, the King of Saud went on telly and said they would have died at that instant somewhere else ...

If you allow a less pre-determined world - you can fit in free will - yippee ! but you then buy into difficulties about god's view of the future. Thomas Aquinas would say he was/is aware of it but cant control it. - or wont control it

Pain. premature death of children, suffering, starvation are in the same category ( discussed for thousands of years )

whirlyhurly //Why blame God, it was a force of nature, an earthquake//

Isn't your god supposed to have made everything, including Nature? God gets the credit for all things beautiful, so why not the bad things.

The most absurd thing I've heard is when a baby is born, it is a gift from god. If that infant dies, then it is god's decision and we are not supposed to understand the reason for this callous act.

no more than I can explain why some people should have died in a terrible accident but survive.
well I was gonna say this shouldnt be in Science but would be better off in Religion and Spirituality

and then I noticed it was in Religion and Spirituality - - - oops

why ask for people's opinions and then reply well I think that is a load of crap ? I kinda think you were gonna say that anyway no matter what
David Small.....I don't chase myself silly looking for reasons for a natural event....every natural event has a cause.

And if....when I pass over.....I discover a God.... he'll get the sharp end of my tongue!
Some may say... the Almighty gave us life, and a planet on which to live it. A planet that is alive, just as we are. Sometimes the mood is high, sometimes low.
It offers many fruits, but unfortunately, some are sour.
You have me a little bemused wildwood - are you saying you believe (a) God created the Earth and it is therefore the fault of that God?

Or if you do not believe that, you still seem to be laying the blame at the door of a God anyway.

Why do you personally think this terrible thing happened?
