I have found out today that my niece is being christened in June. My issue is that I have no idea what I should wear. Last two formal occasions I went to were funerals so I don't have any suitable smart clothes. I don't want to waste money on stuff I won't wear again (I am a stay at home mam so just wear jeans, etc). The christening is in South Wales and the other females there will be done up to the 9's (very bling, hair done to within an inch of its life, make-up plastered on (but in an over the top way, as opposed to tarty). I don't do skirts although I would do a really, really long one at a push. I really need some help and direction on this one please.

wear black trousers and a white top
Nice pair of wide leg trousers with matching jacket, satiny blouse in a bright colour. If it's a Catholic christening you may need a hat or fascinator as well.
Some plain black trousers and a nice top...not a glitzy going out top!

Dunno about anyone else, but I've noticed a heck of a lot of women who go to christenings dressed like they're going to a nightclub on the pull, they look ridiculous.

Sure ,dress nicely, but you're going to a church service not to down 15 pints of cider, buy a kebab then throw it all back up again!
Why don't you get yourself a maxi dress they are in again this year and team it with a pashmina in a matching colour (pashmina can then be used again during winter)

To make yourself more comfortable wear a pair of leggings under the dress - get some really nice dresses of internet for next to nothing and can be worn at almost every summer party
Daffy not a good idea with the 7 kids that Sherr has it would be black before she got to the church - something with more colour would be more sensible

It's five, not seven!
anything smart casual.as others have said, a hat or head covering and cover your shoulders if its catholic
apologies sherr I knew it was more than a couple - no offence meant.
I went to my grandchildrens christening in black trousers with ankle boots under, pretty top and coat - was still quite cold then. People just want you there, it isnt a fashion parade.

God, I hope it's not Catholic, can't even begin what actual clothes to wear without factoring in a hat!
Rest assured hats are no longer a requirement in Catholic Churches.

I know you are a bit bohemian, so why change your style, a nice maxi dress as suggested with a wrap or pashmina would be fine.

Thanks all - not big on smart clothes or make-up, etc.

FGT - no problems, if I had started having children younger it may well have been up to seven by now!
Have you a friend of a similar size you could borrow from? A few of us have done that for those events
what colouring are you Sherr and what colour do you like to wear?
(i) be yourself sherrard....the number 1 rule
(ii) you could rent something for the day

and I read mam as "man" and I spluttered........

I am dark (with grey) haired, but naturally scruffy! Don't think anyone would appreciate me showing up in jeans! On the plus side, whatever I wear I won't look as frumpy as my twin sister (bit horrid but true).
without being cheeky may I ask what size you are, how tall and if you are big chested and smaller bottom or the other way around

Sorry just looking at some dresses for you

do you like bright colours or pastel?
This is going to sound so "Duuuh, yeeahh!" but ...

... an LBD ?

Everyone needs a Little Black Dress (get over the resistance to wearing a dress!). They are classic, and can be worn anywhere ... wedding, christening, evening out, night club, casino, cocktail party ... you just vary the accessories.

You MUST have an LBD.

And they are so classic, you will upstage the bling brigade without even trying.
