my Dad (not a Muslim) always walked on the outside to protect Mum - possibly in case an Austin 7 mounted the pavement and bumped into her and laddered her stockings - but that used to be common practice. Now it's about as common as young people giving up their seats on trains to older ones, which is not very. In fact, most of the people who've ever done it for me have looked like kids of subcontinental heritage, though I can't tell what religion they are. Nice of Mr Pdust to be still doing it, though.
Keyplus, //It’s to do with Muslim women born in the East. Naomi is trying to corner the problem.//

I don’t know what ‘cornering’ the problem means Keyplus, so I’m not trying to do that. However, I didn’t say ‘born in the East;’ – I said ‘born into an eastern culture. Actually, if you are claiming there is no a difference between women born into western cultures and those born into eastern cultures, you should think before you speak again because your views on western culture are well documented.
JNO – I know what you meant there and as Pixie said that it was personal thing. But then I can put some emphasise on it by saying that according to Islam it is not even personal as Islam clearly says that men are protectors for women. I know when I will associate Islam with this then few women would never accept how good they feel when their husband (or even partner) does or say anything like this where it sounds that he cares for them. I usually carry heaviest of shopping bags and my wife carries lighter and she quite enjoys all that. As for giving up seat, I am from Pakistan (as majority of you know) there you wouldn’t have to stand longer at all and anyone younger than you would happily give you seat. I always do that here but was seriously told off by women (older than my mother) that by so I was trying to give her a hint that she was too old to stand.

Keyplus, you made the connection between grasscarp's post and islam. So since you did, will you answer my question?
some women do take offence for the oddest of reasons, keyplus, it's true. I used to stand for older people of either sex but found when I arrived in Britain that this was almost never done. (It still happens in Europe, though.)
Hi Keyplus, your post at 21:37 seems to indicate that you think that grasscarp's post was aimed at muslims. Is there any particular reason why you should make such an association or are you just teasing?
wasnt it nox who made the connection? sorry nox, just seems your post must have been overlooked there.
Pdust. Keyplus did mention grasscarp by name
My partner does all what you do Keyplus.
Father Ted - May be my mistake. Perhaps grasscarp was referring to Christianity. What do you recon?
Question Author
Keyplus, you could have a good point but for the fact that Christianity can't be accused of doing any of the things on grasscarp's list. It does limit the role of women but only within the Christian church. If you don't want to discuss Islam in the context of this question do you have any contribution to make re. other religions?
6 million Women murdered as witches across Europe by fanatical christians. An hard act to follow.
Don't often see you around here, Gromit? What's up? News boring tonight? ;o)
em 10//sith, why should it be necessary for anyone either men or women to cover their head, unless it's to keep the rain off with a hat, or even the sun. seems a strange way for any religion to behave. Telling people how to live their lives, what to eat, how to think, what to wear, i can't see how that is right in any way. //

it is not just islam that does this. Jewish men cover their head, christians are meant to, sikhs do but yet i do not see many complaints about that? However if a muslim women does than it is a big deal. why? because she is muslim? thats a pretty lame excuse i have to say. You also mention that we tell people how to eat, live their lives etc. look at it like this. We do not eat pork. ok, but now scientists have found out that pork can harm you: http://www.onlinetrut...n_be_hazardous_to.htm

also we do not drink alcohol. Why? it is evident alcohol is bad to health and soceity, i do not need links to back that up but if you want i can give.

smoking, again, bad for health. http://www.tendringdc...mokingisbadforyou.htm

so it is evident that everything a muslim does not do is hazardous. Now i know some people (no names) are going to start saying that some muslims smoke, drink etc but that is not islams fault. it is the persons fault. they are giving a bad name to islam, yet they get all the media attention.

I heavily agree with pixies views, and that of keyplus as well.
Sith, smoking is common practice in the Arab world.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8214097.stm
one, that is a cultural thing as i have said many times before, it does not state in the quran you have to do this

two, have you read my post, because some muslims do something how the hell is it islams fault, tell me. for example if an atheist murders does that mean all atheists are murderers? no. it is the same with every other belief or religion.
Sith, did I say it was Islam's fault? I'm simply pointing out that Muslims in many countries smoke.

Incidentally, the Koran doesn't say people have to cover themselves from head to foot either - or have their children circumcised.
sith i didn't say it was strictly a Muslim practice, i know it is not, and i know that people in other religions have similar rules for want of a better word. I cannot understand anyone being told what to do, what to believe, what to think, at least that is my opinion. After all women in Britain fought long and hard for the right to have an education, to not be discriminated against in the workplace, and not be treated as a second class or worse citizen in many other ways
"muslims im many countries smoke" as do many other religions and people, im sure.

this is wear it says cover the hijab:
Proof of this is in the surah al-ahzab (33) verse 59;
O Prophet! Enjoin on your wives, daughters, and the believing women that they should DRAW their outer garment over their persons. That is more proper, so that they may be recognized and not bothered. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

there you go.

about circumcision, i have mentioned before on a previous thread. It is in the hadith and sunnah. which i have told you about before. and in the case that islam does not say anything about it it is not just muslims who do it, but even jews and some americans so it is not just a religious thing. as you believe having the foreskin has benefits we believe that without it it has benefits that are more healthy but that is down to choice.
i understand em and i mean no harm to you,
