Am I just a pedant? I simply detest it when people say "Haitch" instead of "Aitch". Nothing sounds more wrong than when the "Aitch" in NHS is pronounced as "Haitch". It is slike fingernails on a blackboard.

Thanks for the confirmation Divegirl. I also hate people saying "infer" instead of "imply" - they have opposite meanings!
Haitch is one of mine actually lol

My biggest hate is one that I mentioned on here yesterday.

Women chewing gum, It looks so tacky and common, I detest it, such a big turn off!!
mine is when people say schedule with a hard c, the American way :o/
One of mine is "funedral" instead of funeral, why add a d?
Who else is saying schedule now???
right now? lol.. Supernanny (USA).. but she may have said it for the American audience ;o)
I keep saying it in my head and now I'm unsure that I say it right...!!!
*shedule" for us Brits. "skedule" for the Yanks.

my boss says skedule.. bleuurrrghhhh!
People saying "will you learn me that"
I say skedule....woops.

That'll stick in my mind now and I'll soon find other people saying wrong a 'pet hate' lol
sorry ummmm.. it will really annoy you now, lol ;o)
I know....

My pet hate is the double negative. I don't want nothing....that's a real tongue biter..!
Never heard anyone say FUNEDRAL but I hear a lot of people say the following:

PACIFIC instead of specific
SKELLINGTON (skeleton)
REFUGE collector instead of REFUSE

In written form on Answerbank LOOSE is very often written instead of LOSE
And most school students write "Don't No" rather than "Don't Know" and "Would OF" instead of "would have"

A parent of a student wrote to me complaining that " this homwork woz 2 hard 4 my daurter"

Yes, much of the English language has been affected by American pronunciation, such as "harass". English puts the emphasis on the first syllable and American on the second. I think Frank mispronouncing it in "Some Mothers Do Av Em" had something to do with popularizing it.

Factor - I've even seen English undergraduates write "would of" instead of "would have".
