Does Sharia Law have a place in the UK justice system?

According to the BBC website, a Saudi Arabian female journalist who worked on a TV programme which described a Saudi man's extra marital affairs has been taken to court, found guilty and sentenced to 60 lashes.

Islamic Law courts are already operating within the UK legal system (in an 'unofficial' capacity) in much the same way as Jewish Law courts have been doing so for many years.

Given the above example of how extreme Islamic Law (Sharia) can be, should this situation continue?

Should we scrap these localised Jewish and Islamic 'courts'?

Incidentally, the man in this story got five years in jail and 1000 lashes. I'm no expert on 'lashes' but I would be very surprised if anyone could survive that many. So this is probably a death sentence for this particular philanderer.

No. I don't think Sharia Law has any place in western society because of the severity of punishments, and the fact that the Law isn't really recognised by us. However, I'd be the first to advocate 3 or 4 birch lashes to some of our thugs!

this is not a joke!!!! so many woman get lashes in islam just for wearing makeup or talking to the wrong person, they get lashed by the men for having a life, or wanting to have a life. it should not be allowed

thats ok. i dont want sharia law here either. they make it up as they please, its only the men that are allowed to make the sharia law decisions, no woman can speak. men can have affairs, but if a woman does she gets lashed, men can talk to woman, but if a woman talks to a man other than a fammily member she gets lashed, if a woman is found to be out of the house without permission from the man, she gets lashed and it goes on and on...these examples are not based on britain. i dont know what goes on here.......in regards to sharia law, havent come across anything yet fortunately

No, I don't want it either. Sharia Law only has men in mind, but if other countries feel that it's OK to remain in the past and allow it to carry on, then who are we to oppose it? It's just when the suggestion of it becoming law here's brought up. Most people in the UK'd be against it.

eastern woman are weak and will never stand up for themselves, they would get shot and buried and no one would say a thing!!!as opposed to western woman, who wouldnt get shot and buried and if they did they wouldnt be forgotten about, there would be an investigation.

anyway bottom line is sharia law is never ever to be allowed in this country!!!! it sucks

I believe that in some places, women are now demanding an education and risking life and limb to defy some of the old customs. It'll be a long haul, but it's fraught with trouble, because the men feel threatened by the thought of a woman having a mind of her own, and they'd do their best to prevent a more westernised way of thinking. I believe that it's time for ALL laws to be looked at again, with the possibility of finding some points to agree on, and to amend others, but it'll take not only the women, but men with courage to challenge these laws and try to reach a reasonable agreement.

You've only to read some Dickensian tales, ie Jane Austen & Charles Dickens to realise it wasn't too long ago that western women were dumbed down. All women have male ancestors and siblings - that's who they start with. The old Mullahs need retiring or gagging - they have female relations who could challenge them.

Our church leaders had same control over females by quoting bible etc (still do in some countries). We are still on that battle.

If we dont abide by our church rules we are 'excommunicated' or unwelcome. ie Divorcees cant wed in church - we turn heel and go our own way to the Gov. Registry Office.

A church/temple/mosque/synagogue are for worship of like-minded ppl but God is within you if you believe and your faith can be practised alone, ignoring the 'meeting-place' rules & regulations.

It seems as though most people who have contributed to this particular thread are in agreement – Sharia should not be implemented in the UK.

However, the media have a different view. You never really see criticism of Islam or Islamic ideals in the mainstream press. In fact, other than the odd occasion ('Undercover Mosque' being one of them) you never hear criticism of Islam at all. I wonder why?

Alluding to a question I asked earlier about last week's Question Time, I noticed that Nick Griffin called Islam a “wicked religion” and went on to describe the subjugation of women as one of his key criticisms of this faith. His words were refuted by Baroness Warsi. Or at least I thought they were...

She said, “Mr Griffin is obviously a confused man because on the one hand he says that he doesn't abide and believe in lots of values that he attributes quite wrongly to Islam and yet it was Mr Griffin who was on the front cover of a magazine along with Colonel Gaddafi, Ayatollah Khomeini [several others]... Mr Griffin is a thoroughly, thoroughly deceptive man who comes on here and tries to sell us any message that he wants. He's no friend of Islam. He is here to demonize Islam, just as he demonizes Christianity because there is nothing Muslim about the likes of Abu Hamza and others who actually preach extremism in the name of that faith. Mr Griffin here, preaches extremism in the name of Christianity and brings that faith into disrepute as well.”

This little speech got a loud round of applause. It's quite astonishing that if you say nothing at all with passion and aplomb, you can trick people into thinking you've said something meaningful and insightful, when in fact, you've said precisely nothing at all. She'll go far. What am I saying? She's already gone far and if her above 'answer' is anything to go by, she got there on cushion of hot air and bullsh*t.

How can a powerful and educated woman such as Baroness Warsi be so blind to the fact that Islam subjugates women? If she lived in an Islamic governed country, she would never be able to voice her opinions, let alone be part of the 'establishment'.

And yet, she still defends a faith that would kill her if she stood up in a Sharia governed land and had the temerity to speak her mind.

The good Baroness makes me very angry indeed. How dare she defend a religion that, if it were in power, would at the very least deny her the right to free speech?
