Abortion Clinics In Ohio

I'm currently watching a saga set in Ohio called Little Fires Everywhere.   In it, a teenage girl gets pregnant and without telling her parents or seeing a doctor just walks into a clinic to ask for an abortion.   The receptionist takes her name and she's told to sit in the waiting area.  Before long she is called into a room and the abortion performed.  She is then sent straight home.

Is it really that simple in Ohio?

I meant to say she gave a false name so no form of identificationn wass required.

if you are paying, i expect so.

but artistic licence and all that!

I don't know about Ohio but I saw it happening that easily in 1970s Birmingham. Irish young women coming over for abortions at a certain clinic, false names.

Question Author

This was just a walk in place.  No formalities, no consultation.

According to this clinic that is not how it is in Ohio

https://www.preterm.org/abortion-faq#:~:text=You%20will%20make%20your%20second,abortion%20may%20require%203%20visits.

"Ohio law requires that you receive certain information and sign a consent form at least 24 hours before your procedure. If you’re 17 weeks pregnant or more, the abortion may require 3 visits."

Thanks chelle.

I'm sure that book was written before 2024 - and in 2024, judges in Ohio temporarily blocked a new law requiring a minimum wait of 24 hours before the abortion could be performed. I assume (maybe wrongly) that this new law was aimed at stopping the 'walk-in' culture?

Question Author

Just checked. The book was published in 2017.

Thanks, Naomi. The author lived in Ohio from the age of 10, so I'd think (hope!) what was in the book was based on the facts at the time.

Question Author

I was quite shocked that it could happen like that.

Naomi, I too was shocked - but it wasn't a bolt from the blue, I must have seen or read something similar before.

2017...before the world started changing stateside and Rowe vs Wade was overturned. Much has changed since then, with some states moving to the dark ages.

Now there is a ban that...outlawed abortion at the point electrical cardiac activity could be detected. That can happen as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.

Question Author

That's crazy, pasta.

Is the abortion shown as a bad thing?

If so, it sounds as as though the show might have been financed by right-wing Christians.

Question Author

Not at all.  Quite normal.
