Many things for many people, the make up acting as a mask and as said the unpredictably - it's a very real phobia for many.

The daughter of a friend has a massive fear of clowns. Neither of them know when or how it started. Her 2 older siblings are fine with clowns.
The daughter is now a married woman and the fear is still with her.

I can understand why very young children are scared of them. When I was three a clown coming down the High Street terrified the life out of me.

They're not actually scared of the clowns, more of having water squirted at them from a plastic flower, or having their toes trodden on by giant feet. Not to mention having a bucketful of fake boa constrictor thrown at them.

Coulrophobia is the fear of clowns. Like most phobias it seems irrational to those who do not suffer from it. Personally I'm absolutely terrified of heights.

It's because clowns are scary. Anyone under the age of 10 that isn't scared of clowns is mentally ill. If that describes either you or your child, I urge you to seek professional help.
