We are planning to have a few neighbours round for festive drinkipoos, and we want to invite a nice couple but don't want them to bring their baby who's about a year old. Is there an acceptable way of phrasing that invite? Tin hat on waiting for abuse at us not wanting them to bring their baby....

I like young children and babies but at that age they are party poopers!
A Asquith, no one said this baby was in a Moses basket !!!
NJ was eating in a restaurant when there was one such infant
The baby in the Moses basket was just a few weeks old.
sqad

//Invite them round in the evening and tell them that it will give them time to get the baby in bed.//

So the baby is going to be 'home alone' , then - lol
* must do better *.
I don't blame you for not wanting little ones there.

I don't think there's a nice way to say it though.
The couple might enjoy an evening out without the baby. They may well have someone who can babysit.
I agree with NJ's (first) post.
You are second guessing your neighbours. They may be over the moon to be invited to a 'grown up' party and have a grandparent waiting in the wings to baby sit. It also depends on the time of your 'drinkypoos'. If its cocktail time then yes perhaps you have a problem, but I doubt anyone would bring a child to a drinks party that started after 8 pm but these days who knows. I would suggest if its an afternoon or early evening do don't invite them -if its an evening do then tell them its an adult only party with an apology that you will understand if they can't find a babysitter in time.
And that's the reason why Joseph and Mary couldn't get into any of the Bethlehem inns...They had a wailing baby ensconced in a Moses basket.
Problem solved .. if they do bring the baby, lead them straight through the lounge and out to the shed !
sanmac, no they didn't. Mary was "great with child" Jesus wasn't born yet.

Ah but word had got about with Theland's predictions. They believed him.
Just invite them and say you would love them to come and hope they can get a babysitter.
id just say, we like music..and it can get rocking after few drinks, you know the score mate, slightly off topic, out for a meal the other day
other patrons, brought with them what looked like a 3 or 4 yr old.
screeching it's head off, did not want what was put before it, to eat
parents were like ooh umm, perhaps this that and the other, to placate there little wonder, and so it went on...me and other patrons were like really, obviously new age parent thinking, child knows best.
there were seats at the other end, of the restaurant, i gave a nod, to the waitress, she took my hint..and moved us all. ohh the looks we got...
Start your invitation with the words, "If you can get a babysitter..."
Milk of human kindness flows freely through this parish.

Please come for a drink: Terms and conditions apply.

And bring your own wee dram!
Is it formal wear ?
Can I just ask the OP why she doesn't want them to bring their baby?
