I see a thin rectangle with a crossed lines from one corner to the other a fair bit. I thought it meant 'mobile phone' but not according to any search engines - where the mobile phone emoji is given as a little pic of one. Anybody got any idea? Thanks.

It might be that you're not seeing the emoji that your friend sent. You appear to describing the default symbol that's displayed on a phone screen when the device doesn't recognise the incoming data: https://www.quora.com/What-does-the-X-in-the-middle-of-a-rectangle-emoji-mean

what phone have you got, is it android based or iphone ?

Android phone. My friend added it to a iPhone sent text and I asked what it was and he said did not know he just added it!
If the message is an invitation to a jazz concert it could mean 'no squares, man'.

I will ask next time what my friend thought was being sent! But I agree it must be a default translating the emoji from iPhone to Android
