Bonne Année à tous.

A New Year's gift to friends and enemies of the EU. It's an intelligent .comment by De Tocqueville from his reflections on the American republic, and his speculations on future threats to its liberties He was obviously speaking by analogy with his knowldge of "L'Ancien Régime". (From where I come from, of course, I see this as a rather profound anticipation of the methods by which democracy regresses into oligarchy)

"If despotism were to establish itself in today's democratic nations, it would probably have a different character. It would be more extensive and more mild, and it would degrade men without tormenting them...The sovereign [VE: read Commission], after taking individuals one by one in his powerful hands and kneading them to his liking, reaches out to embrace society as a whole. Over it he spreads a fine mesh of uniform, minute, and complex rules, through which not even the most original minds and most vigorous souls can poke their heads above the crowd. He does not break men's wills but softens, bends, and guides them. He seldom forces anyone to act but consistently opposes action. He does not destroy things but prevents them from coming into being. Rather than tyrannize, he inhibits, represses, saps, stifles, and stultifies, and in the end he reduces each nation to nothing but a flock of timid and industrious animals, with the government as its shepherd...".

Only Islam demands our society adjust itself to suit them.
We have thriving Chinese communities that work hard and buy into Britishness.
As Naomi said, none of the other religions don't make demands either.
None of them go bombing and stabbing to make their points.
Try publishing a cartoon of Mohammed and you will get the point. Literally!
Multiculturalism still divides society. Muslims just seem to have a greater problem than most as the news indicates on a regular basis. Not that everyone is the same, most folk are fine, but that doesn't mean there's no problem. I don't have issue with folk bringing a flavour of their culture to feel comfortable with, but there is a limit beyond which it becomes a decisive issue.
Amazing the thread's jump from EU to Islam though.
OG - when was the last time somebody was attacked by a Sikh using the Koran?
my point exactly OG.

Theland, the Chinese are specifically given cards saying do not and do in certain countries. Your hatred of Islam is blinding you with a cloud of delusion. I blame the media. How it affects kids these days :/
OG - typo - "kirpan "
Spaghetti - tell that to the two stabbing victims still in hospital in Manchester.
I'm out. Good luck.
Another typo - "Spath " so sorry.
it's not the typo it's the one track mind.
Oh come on spath. Why insult me? I have been respectful to you.
Spath, //Your agenda is set on Muslims, seems one you just can't let go of. //

That I guess is addressed to several people here, me included. I'll ask you again. Why do you think the followers of Islam are singled out?
I don't mean to insult you, i'm just saying it how i see it. What's the point of discussing something with someone who is so set on their thoughts weather right or wrong.

this thread wasn't about Islam or Muslims, you made it that way, and you've then repeated your thoughts on them. So where can we go from here? No where, so what's the point.

We will have to agree to disagree.
Yes I saw your response.
Have you ever been to Stamford Hill?
Naomi, this thread is not about Islam, nor is it about Muslims. I was addressing immigration on a whole, not your preferred angle on it.
I've been to Stamford Hill, Rockrose. What's your point?
spath, you're avoiding the question. Why?
My question was to Theland.
I never realised it was OK to think yourself of being superior to a group of people specifically one of a minority then to constantly defame that religion due to the mentally ill actions of a few individuals that warp their reasoning only which you've heard about from the media. Which, we can't always trust can we...

So... 'whatever'.
