Here is an extract from the BBC Regional News today (link below contains it)

People in Wool village, whose name has nothing to do with sheep, say a request by an animal rights group to rename it is "stupid" and "ridiculous".

Peta have written to Wool Parish Council asking them to rename the village "Vegan Wool".

The group says Wool should change its name as there is "systemic" cruelty to sheep in the British wool industry.

Wool Parish Council has posted the letter on their Facebook page asking for resident's thoughts.

well peta has its moments but that is not to say that they are all bad.
PC gone mad.
good grief!!

Haven't they got anything better to do ?
sounds like a stunt, which has got into the news, so mission accomplished. I'd be quite pleased if I was their press officer.
Wool is about 2 miles from where I'm sitting now - it's so ludicrous it must be a publicity stunt which has probably worked.
It has led to some comical quotes in the reports - I liked this one.

//Perhaps this proposal could start a trend. Brace yourself for more baaa-rmy names in 2019: Notmeatingham, Be-Kind-To-Shrews-Bury and Veggie Bangor and Mash.//
tell them to get knitted
wool is the place outside Dorchester isnt it

woolbridge in Thos Hardy - where Angel Clare and Tess spend their honey moon (oops wedding night) and HE leaves her when she tells him she's already had a baby

where does the name come from ?
Yes PP Woolbridge Manor sits just on the outskirts of the village and I believe Wool comes more from the word like well meaning spring. It's about 10 miles from Dorchester.
It is a publicity stunt to get people talking about Peta... and it looks like it is working!!!
Here's some more utter madness:

https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/17238670.york-pub-changes-name-from-shoulder-of-mutton-because-it-might-put-vegetarians-off/

No doubt they will serve a dish called "vegetarian shoulder-of-mutton" where various vegetables are cooked and shaped to look like a leg of lamb. I was in a pub a few weeks back and on their menu was "vegetarian fish and chips". Upon inspection it turned out to be deep fried cheese and chips. Why do vegetarians and vegans have to imitate meat dishes?
I can just about understand a decision based on business sense, the village one is just plain daft or a set up - though they tried similar on 'Slaughter Bay' in America.
I like PETA they do a lot of good, but sometimes they get it wrong, as here, BUT like some say it was maybe a publicity stunt ...
PETA are very big on killing animals so I don't have much time for them tbh, plus they have some very bizarre ideas about pets.
I'm sure the hearts of the people of PETA are in the right place, but when they come out with total nonsense that sheep do not consent to being sheared, and "cows and other female farm animals are raped", I think it's just best to ignore them.

https://www.peta.org/features/rape-milk-pork-turkey/

I would suggest it would be entirely impossible to have a reasoned conversation with anybody who believes cows are raped or that we must obtain the consent of a sheep before it is sheared.
this is OTT, but there is nothing here harming animals. Animals rights on a whole is a good movement.
IO'm sorry I have no time for a animal right group who kill over 90% of the animals they get their hands on because they consider them better off dead than being someone's much loved pet.

Sorry Kval i'd never subscribe to the Washington post and doubt many here would.
