I think that stems from the emancipation of women, children and other family members from the old hierarchies of the 50's where the 'Dad' was the bread winner, Mum stayed at home and kids all chipped in to a whole unit and decisions were made about where folks holidayed, what they did and where folks went based on the opinion of primarily the male provider,...

No, because there's only me. It might be true of care homes, however.

I realise I watch very little 'shared t.v. viewing. What I find interesting isn't what the other does, so I sit with the t.v on, but I watch what interests me on my Kindle.
Question Author
Are we becoming selfish & solitary? Or just more selective in our habits ?
Question Author
That pic of a family gathered around the t.v, does look after doesnt it? .. compared to the habits of today.

* does look dated* .. should read.
It does now the kids have left.

There are 3 adults in our home, we are all best Mates, no issues whatsoever, we just get on with things.

But it kind of works lozzy.
Could that be a generation thing though, that we don't feel the need to live in each other's pockets? I wonder with all the technology/ social media today, modern families are less tight knit?

"We just get on with things"
Your own things, as in your own individual things Baldric?

The 3 of us work together to run the household as a partnership, no-one has a majority vote we just get on with it
The family hub has grown up, hence not as much of a variety at home.

Mrs Oz and I spend time together but we both have interests the other doesn't share. We don't hold each other back rather encourage each to follow their interests.

Snap lozzy.
I think that's a facile sentence not a loaded one
I am with Jack here, as I live alone as well.

But when I was growing up in the 50's and 60's with Mum and Dad and my little brothers, we had a wonderful family life. We all watched the TV together, and eat our meals together. But I am not sure how common place that it nowadays.

I am glad I was part of the generation that enjoyed a proper family life.
I think that stems from the emancipation of women, children and other family members from the old hierarchies of the 50's where the 'Dad' was the bread winner, Mum stayed at home and kids all chipped in to a whole unit and decisions were made about where folks holidayed, what they did and where folks went based on the opinion of primarily the male provider, seconded by the mother. When you have only one or two people in charge things are on the surface more close knit, whereas now everyone does far more things that they please themselves. No-one is forced to watch the one TV that one family member has paid for, people all have their own devices and thus a larger online circle of like minded friends not available to other generations. Are we less tight knit? My own family no, hit one of us and you'll see people swarming from all four corners of the globe to deal with it, rather than two doors down is all.
Hasn't it always been like this? I remember when television became popular the cry went out that it had turned the family circle into the family semi circle.
Mostly just me and my dog, except for when my man is home from work (he works away). It's a very happy home, with people always popping in, whether that's for dinner, or just a tea. I'm very lucky to not feel alone even though I technically am alone most of the week when at home!
no, there is only me, Mr Em passed away many years ago now.
